Does your ✨ SPIRIT ✨ feel down because you missed last night’s October edition of The Julie Novak Storytelling Club? We understand! We loved seeing all the SPIRITed faces in that room, all of whom are card-carrying members, including our Executive Director @evatenuto, who, for the first time in ten years, shared a personal story against the backdrop of her first solo exhibition of paintings, “Life After | After Life,” now on view at @goodworkinstitute. 👩‍🎨🎨🫟

We also celebrated TWO 🎉🥳🎈 birthdays: beloved TMI Project anchor and legend @saribotton as well as Eva’s mom Alice, a fervent supporter of ours from the very beginning. (Which meant, of course, cake for all! 🎂)

Don’t worry; if you missed it, we still have the October online club meeting on Wednesday, 10/21, with the same exact theme, SPIRIT. Head over to tmiproject.org/club to register now. ✍️📝🗣️

Hey, did you catch the sold out run of A Streetcar Named Desire at the Lodge at Hotel Lilien a couple weekends ago? (Skillers was very proud to be a sponsor, and our founder James played 'Steve'!)

Well, TONIGHT, May 21st at 6:00pm, the Doctorow Center for the Arts will be once again hosting a screening night with some really special films.

This round is a double feature, first up is the Lady of Larkspur Lotion (2014), of which the play of the same name is credited for the character inspiration for Blanche DuBois.
They'll be joined by director Sergio Rico and starring actress Lora Lee Ecobelli who have made themselves available for a Q/A after the film!

Following that will be a screening of the original Streetcar Named Desire (1951), which is sure to be a hit.

Admissions are completely FREE, and concessions are available, so go down to the Doctorow Center for the Arts at 6:00pm!

We’re so thrilled that our docu-short “One Story at a Time: @celestelecesne” was awarded @qsftag’s Power of Community Award, sponsored by @questcenter_integrativehealth, and that TMI Project Operations and Programs Manager Blake Pfeil (@allamericanruins) was present to accept it. Thank you Tag! Queer Shorts Film Fest for hosting us.

We brought storytelling to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Annual Education Conference last week in Albany, New York!

NAMI New York State is an organization of families, friends and individuals whose lives have been affected by mental illness.

We presented a screening of One Story at a Time, and also hosted a LGBTQIA+ Storytelling for Suicide Prevention in Young Adults workshop session with performances by TMI Project storytellers.

Thank you to NAMI New York State for hosting!

As I mentioned yesterday, so much has been brewing in the backdrop of everything I’ve been navigating. Here is another exciting update!

The @tmiproject #docu-short One Story at a Time: Celeste Lecesne has been in the works for years and has finally made its way out into the universe!

It captures the journey of Celeste, my beloved friend and the cofounder of #thetrevorproject - the largest #suicideprevention #lifeline for LGBTQIA+ youth.

This film is in the midst of touring the #filmfestival circuit. It’s been screened in New York, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Colorado, California, Utah, Florida, Virginia, West Virginia, New Mexico, Connecticut, Oregon, Illinois, North Dakota, Nevada, New Jersey, and Georgia. It won Best Documentary at OutWest Film Festival and Best LGBTQ Film at The Global Drama Project.

IT CAN BE SEEN FROM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD THIS WEEK via @globe_events virtual film festival. It’s 10 minutes of beautiful storytelling. Check it out if you can!

#OneStoryataTime serves as an excellent catalyst for launching meaningful dialogue, and we believe it can do even more when paired with a well developed cultural competency training for adults and true storytelling curriculum for youth. Our goal is to ensure no #LGBTQIA+ child reaches the point of crisis where they need to make a life-saving call. Research shows that #LGBTQ+youth who have at least one supportive adult in their life are 40% less likely to attempt suicide. Many well meaning adults lack the cultural competency to fully support #queer youth, and this film, paired with targeted training could help fill that gap. Additionally, when provided with affirming spaces to explore their identities and express themselves authentically, their risk of suicide drops by 50%. Affirming spaces for exploration and expression? That’s TMI Project’s sweet spot!

This is the last piece Julie and I created together. She is responsible for the #interview that evoked the story told in this film. It’s even more important to me to get this piece to reach its full potential. It’s a powerful way for her #legacy to live on.

Oh, & thanks @bostonglobe giving us a shout out this week!
