A NOTE FROM THE BARBOSA FAMILY 💙

TODAY • SEPTEMBER 8

🌊 PUBLIC CELEBRATION: 5:30–7:00 PM
🎗️ RIBBON CUTTING: 5:45 PM
💙 SPECIAL TIME FOR SAMUEL’S FAMILY & FRIENDS: 7:00–8:30 PM

Dear Community,

Today is a very special and emotional day for our family.

The Barbosa Family is incredibly thankful to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Samuel Barbosa Memorial Touch Tank inside Floating Sea Aquatics and Floating Sea Café.

Samuel was a longtime advocate and supporter of FSA RECS, our 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to Rescue • Education • Conservation • Service.

Samuel loved nature. He loved animals and reptiles. He loved teaching. He loved his friends and students, including children and adults of all abilities. He was a fighter, and what many people never realized was that Samuel himself fought one of the most devastating disabilities every single day.

His presence is greatly missed.

Today will not simply be a memorial. It will be a celebration of Samuel’s life, love, service, and legacy.

Come experience the touch tank, spend time together, play games, enjoy activities, try some Sam’s Sticks, enjoy Kava, and simply celebrate with us.

To the public, we truly hope you enjoy Samuel’s Memorial Touch Tank for many years to come. Please treat it with kindness and respect. Follow all of the rules and help us protect the beautiful creatures that call it home.

Thank you for the tremendous love and support you have shown Samuel and our family.

To Samuel’s family, friends, students, and siblings:

He is proudly watching over all of you.

He loves you, and he is so incredibly proud of you.

He wants you to run your race. Keep going. Keep fighting. Keep loving. And when the time comes, sprint to the finish.

Live your life fully. Love one another deeply. Make your life count.

And one day, when your race here on Earth is complete, Samuel will be there to meet you at the finish line.

Until then, keep running.

His ripple continues. 💙

With all our love,

The Barbosa Family

Here's a few moments that was captured for my fight last night... I just want to thank everybody on my team, my coaches, sponsors, and supporters. Without all of y'all, I wouldn't have made it there. Thanks to @combatnightmma for the opportunity to showcase my talent. I didn't get my hand raised last but I still enjoyed every moment of it. I love to be tested and love to compete. My ultimate mission is to be the best version of myself and inspire others while doing it. I promise y'all I will be back better than before. I look forward to the next time I get back in the cage. Thank y'all for all the love and support and know that I love and support y'all too.

Many women assume fat loss resistance means “thyroid damage.”

From a biomedical standpoint, thyroid changes during restriction are often a regulatory response.

Here’s Why👇

• Energy restriction lowers T3 levels
Sustained calorie deficits reduce circulating triiodothyronine (T3), decreasing resting metabolic rate as part of adaptive thermogenesis (Hall et al., 2022).
→ Lower thyroid activity conserves energy.

• Lean mass influences thyroid-mediated expenditure
Skeletal muscle is a major determinant of metabolic output. Loss of muscle amplifies the metabolic slowdown associated with reduced T3 (Phillips & Winett, 2021).
→ Muscle preservation moderates decline.

• Stress suppresses thyroid signaling
Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which can interfere with peripheral conversion of T4 to T3, compounding metabolic adaptation (Hackney, 2020).
→ Stress magnifies conservation signals.

• Recovery and fuel restore signaling
Improved energy availability and resistance training can normalize thyroid-mediated energy expenditure over time (Hall et al., 2022).
→ Adaptation is often reversible.

• Behavior shifts under metabolic strain
As thyroid-mediated expenditure declines, fatigue increases and perceived behavioral control drops (WHO, 2023).
→ Physiological strain affects adherence.

👉🏻Thyroid slowdown during dieting is often the body protecting energy, not permanent dysfunction.

How I Help👇
I manage energy availability, preserve lean mass, regulate stress, and structure recoverable training so thyroid adaptation supports sustainability instead of prolonged suppression.

Not every slowdown is damage.
Often, it’s regulation.

Insulin resistance isn’t a diagnosis that appears overnight. It’s a physiological progression shaped by muscle mass, energy balance, stress, and recovery.

Here’s Why👇

• Skeletal muscle governs glucose disposal
Muscle is responsible for the majority of insulin-mediated glucose uptake. Loss of lean mass reduces this capacity, increasing circulating glucose and storage pressure (Phillips & Winett, 2021).
→ Less muscle = less glucose control.

• Chronic energy mismatch worsens signaling
Repeated cycles of restriction and overcorrection alter insulin sensitivity and metabolic efficiency (Hall et al., 2022).
→ Weight cycling stresses regulation.

• Cortisol impairs insulin action
Elevated cortisol from sleep disruption or chronic stress decreases insulin sensitivity and increases visceral fat deposition (Hackney, 2020).
→ Stress compounds resistance.

• Low physical tension reduces sensitivity
Resistance training improves insulin sensitivity by increasing GLUT4 expression and glucose uptake in muscle (Slater et al., 2023).
→ Mechanical load enhances metabolic function.

• Energy expenditure adapts downward
As metabolic rate declines through adaptive thermogenesis, glucose disposal efficiency becomes more critical for body composition regulation (Hall et al., 2022).
→ Lower output increases storage risk.

👉🏻Insulin resistance is not just about sugar intake, it’s about muscle, stress, adaptation, and energy regulation.

How I help👇
I prioritize progressive resistance training, adequate protein, structured energy intake, and stress regulation so insulin sensitivity improves instead of declining.

Metabolism doesn’t fail overnight.
It adapts to repeated inputs.

From a biomedical standpoint, adipose tissue is governed by endocrine signaling, not intention.

Here’s Why👇

• Leptin regulates energy defense
As fat mass decreases, leptin levels fall. Reduced leptin increases hunger and lowers energy expenditure to restore fat stores (Hall et al., 2022).
→ Fat loss activates defense signaling.

• Insulin sensitivity determines storage efficiency
Skeletal muscle is the primary site of glucose disposal. When lean mass declines, insulin sensitivity worsens and energy is more easily stored as fat (Phillips & Winett, 2021).
→ Less muscle increases fat-storage bias.

• Cortisol modifies fat oxidation
Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which impairs insulin sensitivity and promotes visceral fat storage (Hackney, 2020).
→ Stress shifts energy toward conservation.

• Adaptive thermogenesis reduces metabolic output
During sustained restriction, resting metabolic rate declines beyond what tissue loss alone explains (Hall et al., 2022).
→ The body lowers expenditure to defend energy.

• Training stimulus influences tissue retention
Progressive resistance training increases insulin sensitivity and signals preservation of lean mass during deficits (Slater et al., 2023).
→ Mechanical load protects metabolism.

👉🏻Fat loss is regulated by hormones, tissue composition, and adaptation, not just calorie math.

How I Help👇
I manage energy availability, preserve muscle, regulate stress, and structure progressive resistance training so hormonal signaling supports fat oxidation instead of resisting it.

Calories initiate change.
Hormones determine sustainability.
