I’ve been going back to some of my work that captures the feeling that I and so many femme/trans bodies feel right now & for so long... —————————- EL CICLÓN is a magical-tropicalist production & reflection on the exhausting struggle womxn face when they are expected to save those who continuously oppress them. Set outdoors in the middle of Downtown Miami, the live film is projected on a city building, transforming the @youngarts outdoor plaza into a South Florida swamp. I wrote/directed El Ciclón in 2018 (trailer) amidst so many natural/systemic disasters… this campy-absurd film & musical was my way of purging the disgusting machismo & colonial subjugation of our bodies/lands… It’s hard to believe how much worse things are, and yet, how much clearer we are… Filmed in front of live audiences and edited in real time, the new 2026 iteration of El Ciclón is created through a devised research process with the dedicated and inspiring @univofmaryland Theater department and designers. @youngarts Week Miami 2025. I’m still recovering from the amount of insanely talented young artists I got see do their art over 10 disciplines. As a Dance RA, I got to witness the immense growth and incredible passion these dancers poured into each session. What a gift. It’s been 21 years since my own ArtsWeek and although many things have changed, the people you meet in this short time truly do last a lifetime. Special shout out to the incredible RA team who showed me how it’s done, especially my new hermana @kassilu_ . Thank you @youngarts for another ArtsWeek to remember forever. ✌🏽💜🎭🎨🩰💃🏽✨
