October Paint With Jilleen Challenge 🌙
#PaintTheNight

There’s something about light at night that can turn a completely ordinary place into something worth stopping for.

That’s exactly what happened when I saw this photograph by @kateransome.

The deep blue sky, glowing streetlamp, warm windows and dark silhouettes immediately caught my attention, and I saved it thinking, I need to paint this someday.

I finally did—and it became the perfect inspiration for our October challenge.

This month, we’re exploring nighttime scenes and the relationship between light and darkness.

Your scene can be almost anything: moonlight through trees, a porch light, headlights on a rainy road, city lights, a campfire, reflections across water, a glowing window—or your own interpretation of nighttime.

The goal isn’t simply to make everything darker. Pay attention to values: where are your deepest darks? Where is your brightest light? How little light can you use and still make the scene glow?

For my example, I worked in soft pastel on charcoal-black Canson Mi-Teintes Velvet paper, allowing the black surface to become part of the painting and gradually building the light over it.

🌙 OCTOBER PROMPT: PAINT THE NIGHT
Focus: Values + contrast in low light
Medium: Anything you like
Paint: One or more nighttime scenes

I can’t wait to see where you take this one. ✨
