What can a grant make possible?

Last year, the Alastair Swayn Foundation supported research and creative practice exploring some of the most urgent questions facing architecture, design and the built environment.

From multi-sensory design for neurodivergence to algae-based biomaterials, community-led housing, low-carbon regional materials, disaster recovery, housing excellence and conversations between academia and practice. These projects show the power of design research to shape more thoughtful, inclusive and sustainable futures.

@sibling_architecture — Deep Calm: The Regulating Effect of Pressure and Touch

A publication exploring how multi-sensory design can support neurodivergence.

@fieldwork_architects — Built from Here

A project mapping Victoria’s regional materials and manufacturing capacity to support place-responsive, low-carbon building practice.

@katescardifield, University of Technology Sydney — From Sea to Structure

Research into how algae biomaterials can help decarbonise construction and advance sustainable design

@monashurbanlab and @kerstin_thompson_architects — Australian Housing Atlas

An online national portal documenting outstanding Australian multi-residential housing from the past 100 years.

@card_practice — Adapt

An audio series exploring the evolving role architects can play after disasters in Australia.

@itsallabitacademic, University of Melbourne — A podcast bridging academic research and industry insight through conversations between built environment pracademics.

The 2026 Grant Round is now open, with proposals invited across four themes:

- Living Together
- The Non-Urban
- Design for a World Changing Us
- Intelligence and Innovation

Australian Research Grants: $10,000
International Research Grant: $20,000

Applications close 7 July 2026.

🔹 @sibling_architecture – Deep Calm: The Regulating Effect of Pressure and Touch
The creation of a publication that explores how multi-sensory design can support neurodivergence.

🔹 University of Technology Sydney – From Sea to Structure: Greening Architecture and the Built Environment
@katescardifield investigates the role algae biomaterials can play in decarbonising construction and advancing sustainable design.

Celebrate the opening of PRS Australia with welcome drinks and finger food in the Design Hub Gallery.

Join us in the gallery space for networking opportunities with our community of practice researchers and to view the research of our PhD and Masters by Research Examination candidates. Doors open at 5.30pm.

PRS Australia will then be officially opened by PRS Australia Chair, Associate Professor Andrea Eckersley from 6.30pm in the Design Hub Lecture Theatre.

We are honoured to host Prof. Kate Scardifield, acclaimed artist and Co-Director of the Material Ecologies Design Lab in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at University of Technology, Sydney.

Sea matter / Blue media considers the peripheral yet essential forces that shape a creative practice, attending to the currents of process that flow between lab, field, studio, and kitchen. This lecture traces how material knowledges emerge—viscous, living, and in flux. Through intertidal encounters, watery methodologies, and submersion, attention is given to biological processes and the ways matter metabolises, drifts, and swells. How do we create the conditions that shape new materials? What elements are vital? Traversing disciplinary spaces of art, science, and design becomes a means of sensing, sustaining, and knowing. Fluidity and overflow unsettle assumptions, revealing what it means to make with living systems, and the transformative possibilities of matter within the water column and along its edge.

Please note the following order of proceedings

PRS exhibition opening: 5:30pm – 6:30pm, Design Hub Gallery, Level 2

Keynote: 6:30pm - 7:30pm, Design Hub Lecture Theatre, Level 3

Networking and refreshments: 7:30pm - 8:30pm, Design Hub Gallery, Level 2

Global Studio China- CHONGQING DAY 2!! 🐛Today we were introduced to the silkworms and the process of the production. We learnt about their lifecycle from little eggs to making their cocoons that humans then collect for silk. Then, we were lucky enough to be given access to the silk worm labs and were able to see how they were taken care of and even saw some silkworms before making the cocoon and also inside their cocoon. // After lunch break we learnt about fabric dyeing🤩🤩 all of us were making different designs and playing around with different techniques that can be used. We let it soak in the colour and opened it up to see the pretty designs ◡̈ BIG day today 🫶-Caption is written by our amazing UTS student Misya Veona. #utsthinkglobal #utsdab #utsdesign #utsproductdesign #utsfashion #utsviscom #utsccchub #uts #utslife #studentlife #utslife #utsengage

𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘆 𝗘𝗲𝗸 has a well-established experimental field and spatial practice encompassing monumental inflatables and lightweight immersive installations.

By staging tangible interventions in very particular sites, she aims to expand our power of perception in direct relation to the senses and the environment. Her experiments allow people to experience moving, flying or floating, but rather than the sensation of moving through space, we feel that space is moving through us. Her work connects with the deeper layers of ourselves and of our surroundings.

Cocky has been a core-team teacher in the ArtScience Interfaculty at KABK and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague since 2009 and is a member of the KABK Deep Futures Research Group 2023-24, where she explores the voice of darkness from the mudflats of the Netherlands.

Between 2018 – 2023, Cocky led artistic field research programs at the Field Academy at StrandLAB Almere. Recent presentations and exhibitions of her work include: Landscape of Care, Tiznit Marocco (2019); Spectrum, Spring Festival, Utrecht (2020); Amstelpark as Sensorial Heritage – field program, Zone2Source, Amsterdam (2022); Resonant Bodies, 23rd Biennale Sydney (2022); The Muddy Muddy Mystery Tour, Sonic Acts Biennial, Amsterdam (2024); UMAA-Unité Mobile d’Action Artistique, Mille Plateaux – Centre Chorégraphique National, FR (2024).
