Yehwan Song dismantles the contemporary obsession with “liquidity” as a metaphor for digital culture, writes Katherine C.M. Adams, not by pointing out the material infrastructures of the internet but positing laborious, physical sculpture as a “corrective” to the myth of frictionless societies and economies.

How can New York’s institutions help to sustain a culture of freedom and experimentation when so many artists are forced to live precariously? Katherine Adams examines this year’s ”Greater New York,” which wrestles—not entirely successfully—with the city’s anxieties and conflicts.

Join us next Friday, February 6, for a conversation with artist Jewyo Rhii (@barakat_contemporary) and curator Katherine C. M. Adams (@katherine.1433). The program will consider Rhii’s artistic formation in Seoul, South Korea, and the impact of the city’s rapid industrialization on Rhii’s practice, as well as her recent work staging exhibitions internationally. Rhii and Adams will focus on Rhii’s new project Wing Theater, a new commission premiering at @empac_rpi in February 2026, which combines Rhii’s ‘storytelling machines’ into a stage-like, living archive.

Please note that RSVPs are mandatory. Be sure to follow the link in our bio to secure your spot!

staging grounds 🔥 February 20-28, 2026
Featuring Korakrit Arunanondchai, Li Yi-Fan, Na Mira, Jewyo Rhii, and Samson Young

Join us for staging grounds, a new art festival taking place at EMPAC from February 20 to 28, 2026. Featuring Korakrit Arunanondchai, Li Yi-Fan, Na Mira, Jewyo Rhii, and Samson Young, the festival is a platform for performance, installation, and public programs.

By staging our shared experiences, how might we open up new forms of collective possibility? A ‘staging ground’ is the architecture for an event—a place where people, objects, and ideas gather in anticipation of an unfolding scene. Each artist in staging grounds explores how art, cultural memory, and experience are shaped by structures that re-animateevents across time. Across bold new commissions, haunting performances, and delicate artistic gestures, they ask how culture survives by being continuously re-staged.

staging grounds features new commissions by artists Korakrit Arunanondchai (with Tosh Basco, Michael Beharie, Aaron David Ross, and DUCKUNIT) and Jewyo Rhii. Additional artworks by Na Mira and Samson Young, and film by Li Yi-Fan. The program spans open installations and public programs in three distinct sites of gathering—the studio, the lobby, and the theater. Each invites you to witness, question, and take part in the unfolding scenes.

Curator and critic Katherine C. M. Adams @katherine.1433 speaks with artist-filmmaker Suneil Sanzgiri @suneil_sanzgiri about the making of An Impossible Address, a new work developed between Angola, Goa, Portugal, and North America and presented across exhibition and cinema contexts. An Impossible Address has its American premiere later this month.

“An Impossible Address” continues at @empac_rpi curated by @katherine.1433 for a limited time from Oct 29 - Nov 1st with a special film program and reception on Nov 1st programmed by @jasminprix (who also makes a special appearance in the work!)

“Sanzgiri’s new film confronts the contradictions of solidarity and afterlives of collective trauma beyond the grave. How do we bear witness to revolution interrupted? An Impossible Address is styled as a letter that cannot be delivered–seizing on sounds and images that erupt from historical memory.

An Impossible Address builds on Sanzgiri’s extensive engagement with Afro-Asianism, the 1955 Bandung Conference, and cross-continental networks of resistance that bridged India and Angola in struggles for freedom from Portuguese rule. The exhibition of the project engages visually with the idea of the political stage. Alongside the central film, it breaks down the architecture of official performance into informal poetics, through selected image prints and textiles that nod to the nine distinct acts of Sanzgiri’s film. Working against archives’ gaps and lapses, An Impossible Address explores the potency of collective inheritance.”

✨ This Fall, Experience EMPAC as a Living Instrument ✨

What happens when we gather? What do we notice as things come together—and fall apart? At EMPAC, art and research aren’t fixed outcomes, but unfolding experiments—spaces to ask questions of ourselves and each other.

Since 2008, over 700 projects have resonated through our building. Now, in a new chapter, we’re embracing a playful, festival-based model that connects local and global communities in fresh ways. This summer’s TOPOS festival brought nearly 1,000 artists and audiences together—one visitor said:

“EMPAC is the only place where sound can feel like air, architecture, and electricity all at once.”

This season, join us for performances, films, installations, and symposia that embody EMPAC’s spirit of experimentation. Every rehearsal, every gathering, every shift in light or sound is already part of the performance. You are part of it, too.

Upcoming Events:
We Will Not Be Composed performance with Stevie Manning, Soraya Chemaly, and Xuan — Oct 24, 7PM
Installation: An Impossible Address EMPAC-commissioned film by Suneil Sanzgiri — Oct 29–31 (2–4PM), Nov 1 (2–5PM)
Decolonial Practices in Film: Be the Media! with Suneil Sanzgiri + Bhawin Suchak — Oct 29, 5PM, Sanctuary for Independent Media
Memory Without Measure film screenings — Nov 1, 1PM
Break Out Symposium 2025 with UnionDocs — Nov 14–15
Work in Progress: Raft installation experiment by Yanira Castro — Dec 18, 2PM

Also, we’d love your feedback. Complete our short survey (link in bio) and receive:
A $5 drink voucher for The Whiskey Pickle or Evelyn’s Café
An invitation to a private EMPAC tour and reception with Dena Beard, Director of EMPAC
