Happy birthday, honey! I had the best day celebrating you yesterday. You’re the most incredible dog mom, friend, clinician, dollhouse artisan, landscaper, plant mom, gardener, golf cartner, late-night sweet treater, comforter stealer, bird-watcher, travel buddy, jokester, collector, Disney princess, interior designer, sour patch girl, and forlover there ever was. Thank you for being you. 🩵 @katie_schlay

I think you should be more vulnerable with your people.

It’s an opportunity for connection, for healing, for receiving what you need.

At the end of the day, sure, yes of course: we need to be able to give ourselves the things we are looking for from other people.

But I’ve found that when I have people I trust to confide in and that give me those things too: reassurance, relatability/understanding, empathy, forgiveness, love etc *It helps me give those things to myself too.*

And it helps them, feel that they can do the same. That they don’t have to hide shame or guilt or grief.

It strengthens your bonds, your connection, your humanness.

“I don’t judge you” “I don’t think any differently of you” “You’re still a good person” “I love you regardless” “It’s okay to mess up, to be human.”

I love the movement of self healing, of giving yourself what you need- because that is so crucial. But connection is also a basic human need. Often stronger than our desire for anything else. Usually the root of all indifference. You need connection, so don’t cut yourself off from it by not pursuing it ♥️

We’re all just walking each other home 🏡

I’m sorry to bring you back down to reality but 99% of the things you’ve been taught to care about and put your self worth in- aren’t very important.

Let go of the idea that you need to look, be, or achieve a certain way or thing before you are deserving.

You’re deserving because you are, not because you do.

Deserving of love, happiness, peace, content, stability, loyalty, trust, praise, you name it.

How you look is the least interesting thing about you.

The way you get excited about going to Costco, the way you tear up over stories on tv, the way you love your people so fiercely, the light in your eyes when you get talking about an idea, the patience you show when it’s hard to. Those are the things that are important.

i can’t be 100% certain that this thought process is true but it helps me through the hard times and it might help you too 🫶🏽

i’ve heard many people say that they feel their struggles are meant for them to serve others

the issue i’ve seen with this is it’s easy to let yourself become the Martyr (which is really just playing the victim role but with a twist) 😬

But if you can check your ego at the door, this life is so much bigger than just you.

So recently I’ve considered that:

❌maybe when i’m experiencing a slump for “no reason”

❌or when someone else does me wrong

❌or when things outside of my control really just fuck up my plans and makes things harder

maybe it happens, not just because it’s part of my own personal journey and i need to be challenged and grow for whatever reason

but also so that:
- other people can see someone overcome a struggle. they need proof it can be done
- i can be more empathetic to others
- i can help others through a wider variety of challenges
- others don’t feel so alone
- we remember there’s more to life than just “me”

I think there’s something really beautiful to be said for taking the thought “why me?” and turning it into something “for them” 👀

It might just be a chance to walk the walk. Take it 🚶‍♀️
