Long post warning! I was tagged by @nalabear76 and @gauquier to participate in the #20beautifulwomen challenge. I think this is very different than the type of picture that most people choose for this because it doesn't show my face, but I think it is my favorite photo I have of myself. Not because I was at my ideal weight at this point, or because my hair was as long as I'd like it to be again, or anything as superficial as that... Rather, it's my favorite because 1) I didn't know it was taken until after the fact and 2) every time I look at it, I'm reminded of a few moments of clarity and happiness I had when I was going through another deep depression. I've struggled with depression and anxiety my whole life, and when this picture was taken, I had recently begun going to therapy again as I found myself in an unhealthy, abusive relationship that I felt I couldn't escape because I had accepted a marriage proposal. On this particular day, my best friend planned an impromptu road trip for us and we traveled across the state with friends, not yet knowing what was happening to my life because I was ashamed to tell even her that I was hurting so badly because of how I was being treated and fearing what would happen if I left. She gave me hours of escape on this particular day and caught this picture of me reveling in that freedom and admiring something bigger than the demons I was battling in my own mind. When we got back home and it was discovered that I had made this trip with my best friend, the fight was so bad that the injustice of it made me feel strong enough to finally leave. This picture is a reminder that I am not property to be owned or prodded or abused, and whether I am relapsing into my mental illness or not, I am a strong woman. Strength is beautiful, and the pain that I went through ultimately led me to finding happiness with a deserving man and understanding what it feels like to be loved without bounds for all of my imperfections and moods and anxieties as well as my points of beauty. If I tagged you, you're up next! #longpost #sorrynotsorry #domesticabuse #depression #anxiety #mentalillness #disorders #beauty #ocean #florida #daytona
