Last weekend celebrating the notorious B.I.L.L

We are privileged enough with the means to have left America briefly in 2025, and I hope that becomes more frequent in 2026. We are even luckier to have adult friendships strong enough to travel internationally. I would highly recommend Mexico City on Dia de los Muertos. As an archaeologist, I have an affinity for Death and our manifestations of its remembrance. I find it especially beautiful that this culture celebrates it and stares it in the face. I do not have a year-end-review post for 2025, suffice to say it was good to us personally despite the world around us. Love y’all, be good to those around you #diadelosmuertos #méxicocity #mexico #death #getoutofamericaifyoucan

This past weekend we stayed at one of the guest houses at Howard Finster’s Paradise Garden in Summerville, GA. If you don’t know about him as one of the most prolific and respected outsider artists and folk artists in modern history, I suggest looking him up because the world could use his spirit right now. He was a Baptist preacher and a bicycle repairman who only had a 6th grade education, and in 1976 at age 60 he received a vision from God to “create sacred art.” Specially, 5,000 works which he finished by Christmas 1985, and he kept producing into the tens of thousands by his passing in 2001. He also turned his property into the sprawling folk art compound Parade Garden, which attracted artists like the Talking Heads and REM who used his work in album covers and music videos. The first time he flew on a plane was to DC at the invitation of Jimmy Carter for a White House event celebrating American folk artists. Howard Finster glowed with the love of a very cosmic Christ. His works overflow with compassion for all people and all of existence. His works also does not shy away from motifs of sin, death, and the apocalypse. A heavy degree of Americana, UFOs, and psychedelic imagery also feature. He never touched drugs and hardly drank (his only “vice” was a lot of Coca Cola, and he painted on many empty bottles). Some might call his work politically naive with little mention of any hot button political controversies in his long life, but there is a radically political subtext if you look under the hood. Wandering Paradise Gardens it struck me that in all the maximalist sprawling imagery of his tens of thousands of works, there is almost no imagery of any weapons. As a fellow southerner this is very surprising for how prominently guns feature in our culture. He greatly admired our first Catholic President JFK and Jimmy Carter, two figures who found the ire of his fellow southern white Baptists. This was a man focused on his sacred mission with little concern for anyone’s opinions. Like he said, “As for me, I’m just passin’ through this planet.” #folkart #outsiderart #howardfinster #paradisegarden #jesus #bittersoutherner #jimmycarter #summervillega #makeart

These clothes started off white, and we successfully made them not that. Every June in the town of Haro north of Madrid in Spain, a local wine festival culminates with the Batalla del Vino - a wine fight. You are supposed to dress in all white (with a red bandana), and the goal is to be totally purple stained at the end. One of the more chaotic and simultaneously joyful things I have seen. Of course, like any festival that feels very pagan, it is associated with a local Catholic saint from the 6th century, and mass is held in a nearby cave while outside wine fighting and drinking rages. It is a wine making region, and local farmers donate the bad stuff that would go to vinegar to serve as ammunition. One thing you can’t see in the photos is how damn cold it is up in those mountains in the morning. You are soaking wet and shivering by at 9am. It’s awesome, and I don’t think I would have had the party stamina if I hadn’t learned it with many of these people in Athens GA. Go Dawgs. Most festival goers are local or at least Spanish, and they welcome foreign tourists to the event, but they will take extra special care to soak you upon arrival as a visitor. As people who always prioritized experience over other goals like wealth or stability, when friends invited us on part of a world tour after getting out of the Navy, we had to go. Scrape together whatever travel money and time off you can, and do strange awesome things with the people you are proud to call community. 🍷 #spain #harowinefestival #harowinefight #wine #community #travel #godawgs

There were 364 days outside of our wedding day in 2023, but I broke my phone 2 nights before we set sail for our dream weekend. This year's 📸 recap is Corn Wedding material 🩷 It's been a helluva year, where I've worked to be more intentional. There's more work to do, as there always may be. I love my people. You all make life worthwhile. I've learned living is about personal connections, friendships, vulnerability--- the version of yourself that you are because of another.
Thank you @mitch.homie for being the perfect partner, husband 🐻 Every day for over 9 years. I love you, for all time ✨ cheers to 2024 #happynewyear
