Guuuuurl! Being a guncle is already a full time extravaganza, but becoming a GREAT GUNCLE? Guuurl, that is an entirely new level of gay agenda, and the agenda is LOVE, FABRIC, and BABY QUILTS!

I made this I Spy quilt for my great nephews using Tula Pink fabrics, because gurl, those prints are practically a treasure hunt! Tula hides so many colors, animals, and symbols in her designs that every cuddle becomes an opportunity to stimulate little minds and teach children about the world around them. Consider it early childhood education, but make it quilty!

This quilt was made almost exclusively from scraps! So much of the fabric came from generous quilters through #getyourquiltywishesgranted along with contributions from my friend Katie @katikat21 , the official godmother of scraps. Special thanks to homegirl @quilty_mcquilterson for the monkey wrench cameo. And of course Tula scraps and stash from my buckwild bestie @lauraaust Nothing wasted, everything fabulous, and a whole lot of love stitched into every block.

I think it came out beautifully! Now it is off to @mashemodern for some long arm magic before it sashays away to its precious little owners.

Because a great guncle does not just show up, gurl. He shows up with a handmade quilt and a whole lot of personality! @tulapink

It’s BOO-gie season! (Not that I need an excuse to get bougie, but Halloween is also a gay high holy day….)

Some people hear the voice of reason. I hear a dead church lady, my mother, and my friend Katie whispering, “Use ALL the scraps.”

So naturally I built a glowing green haunted mansion and accidentally created enough leftover scrap panels for two more quilts. Jesus wept. The stash multiplied. The loaves and fishes of quilting have struck again.

This entire quilt was built from scraps gifted by my dear friend Katie @katikat21 , my mom @melandtuan and the late church lady legend Karen.( @suzireilart My goal was to use only scraps and to use as many of them as possible. Well, I may have taken that assignment a little too seriously because I went completely buckwild and somehow ended up with enough scrap panels left over for at least two more quilts. Jesus help me and thank you for the abundance.

The mansion glows in layers of green while fields of purple radiate outward into orange and finally dissolve into black. I concentrated more orange in the foreground to create depth and pull the eye into the scene. Every decision was made by instinct. No measurements. No pattern. Just improv and vibes.

This quilt also marks a milestone for me. One of my quilting goals this year was to learn curves, and I finally took the plunge using my homegirl @bettycrockerass Betty Crockerass’s templates. Turns out curves were a lot less terrifying than I had convinced myself they would be. Growth. Healing. Character development.

A haunted mansion built from friendship, family, memory, generosity, and more scraps than any reasonable person should possess.

Happy Birthday to my scrappy godmother, quilting confidante, and unapologetically bougie bestie, Katie @katikat21

Katie is the friend who blesses you with scraps, wisdom, laughter, and exactly the right question when you’re stuck. She never tells me what to think. Instead, she somehow always knows what to say to help me find my own answer. She is thoughtful, compassionate, hilarious, and one of the most genuinely generous people I know.

Whether she’s stitching beautiful quilts, supporting charitable causes, encouraging fellow makers, or spreading kindness wherever she goes, Katie leaves every person and every community better than she found it. Splitting her time between Pennsylvania and Arizona, she has built a quilting family that stretches far beyond geography, connecting people through her warmth, creativity, and enormous heart.

I am so grateful for your friendship, your counsel, your generosity, and, of course, for the mountains of fabulous scraps you have shared along the way.

Wishing the happiest of birthdays to a truly extraordinary human. May your year be filled with joy, adventure, friendship, good fabric, and every blessing you so freely give to others.

Gurl you asked for money shots and here they are: the closeups, the texture, the drama, the full Frida fantasy stitched in cloth and serving face like she’s about to walk the runway at QuiltCon.

Born in Coyoacan in 1907, Frida survived illness, trauma, heartbreak, and a body that tried to limit her at every turn, but she refused to shrink. She painted her truth with no apology. She loved boldly, she lived fiercely, she fought for her culture, her politics, her queerness, her body, her voice. She showed the world that beauty is not perfection, beauty is honesty. That is exactly the energy stitched into every block of this quilt.

Her legacy reminds us that art can be resistance, art can be survival, art can be liberation. As she said, “I am my own muse, I am the subject I know best.”

And guuurl keep your eyes on my feed because I will be dropping closeups of this quilt.

Guuurl today my whole sewing room is buzzing because I just received a box back from my long armer Kristen @mashemodern , and you know that feeling when you slice the tape open and the quilt you dreamed up comes back transformed into a textured masterpiece. It is electric, it is emotional, it is everything. And today the quilt in that box is my tribute to Frida Kahlo, the woman who turned her life into art and her pain into power.

She played everything from classical heroines to male roles, redefining what performance could be and who it could belong to. Her global tours, her fearless artistic choices, and her unmistakable presence made her a cultural force who shaped modern acting and set the standard for theatrical brilliance.

La Katie quilt has been gifted and my niece Katie loved her.

She even made her own quilt drop video: full drama, full joy, full purple powered magic. Watching her reveal it lit me up from the inside.

This quilt carries five generations of women from my family. In the months before my dad passed, he sent me photos of his grandmother and great grandmothers. His life’s work was making sure every human being was remembered, and that devotion is stitched into every inch of La Katie.

I hope this quilt gives her strength.
When she wraps herself in it, I hope she feels the power of all the women who walked before her and all the women who walk with her now.

La Katie quilt is finished, gurl, and she is radiating every ounce of purple power the ancestors intended. 💜✨

My dear friend Katie @katikat21 longarmed her, and let me tell you… she did an exceptional job. Every swirl, every curve, every line feels like a love letter to the women who came before us.

Five generations of my family are stitched into this quilt. In the months before my dad passed, he sent me photos of his grandmother and great grandmothers — honoring his life’s work of making sure every human being was remembered. That devotion lives in La Katie now.

This quilt is for my youngest niece, so she can feel the strength, softness, grit, and beauty of the women who shaped her story long before she arrived.

The quilt top celebrating Frida Kahlo is officially done and she is serving every ounce of color drenched drama I hoped for. I never work from patterns. I let each quilt organically reveal itself, trusting instinct and improvisation. For this one I wanted the feeling of a serape, a traditional Mexican blanket woven with bold stripes and saturated color meant to wrap the body in warmth and cultural pride. This is a scrap quilt made entirely from scraps gifted to me by the amazing Katie @katikat21 . I love scraps because limited quantities push me to experiment, to try new color combinations, to think intentionally about how each fabric can shine. It becomes a creative puzzle that forces me to be thoughtful and brave with every choice.

Frida Kahlo, born in 1907 in Coyoacan, remains one of the most powerful artistic voices of the twentieth century. Her life was shaped by illness, injury, passion, politics, and an unbreakable creative force. She painted herself as a way to tell the truth about identity, desire, disability, and the fierce cultural pride of Mexicanismo, the celebration of Indigenous heritage, folk traditions, and handmade beauty woven into everyday Mexican life. Her work has become a global symbol of strength, authenticity, and unapologetic self definition.

My connection to Frida is personal and deep. In the mid 1990s I visited La Casa Azul before it became a tourist destination. I was the only person there, wandering through her rooms in complete silence. The docent watched how reverently I moved through her space and let me touch the urn that held her ashes. That moment has lived in my bones ever since. Now that the quilt top is finished, I feel like I have stitched that memory into cloth; honoring the woman who taught the world that art and pain and beauty and identity can coexist in the same breath.

Guuurl this quilt is serving I spy but make it couture, and I am living for every saturated inch of it.

I dove straight into the technicolor universe of @tulapink because her fabrics are basically a maximalist treasure hunt. They are packed with obvious animals, hidden creatures, secret symbols, and little surprises that make the perfect playground for teaching tiny humans their colors, animals, and shapes during cuddle time while playing I spy with my little eye. Education but make it fabulous.

This quilt is stitched with extra love for my dear friend’s son on his first birthday. I made him one before he was born, but the flimsy disappeared in the mail last year which was truly heartbreaking. A tragedy in fat quarters. @scchinadoll

Happy birthday little homie from your self appointed guncle on the other coast. May your life be as bright as the colors in this quilt.

Special thanks to @katikat21 for her generosity. Many of these blocks were her orphan blocks and she’s become my scrap fairy. This quilt is truly a mashup between the two of us.
