We love this capture of a curious Gilded Flicker by Kathi Marston! #featurefriday In its color pattern, this bird combines some elements from both the Yellow-shafted and Red-shafted forms of Northern Flicker. However, it is slightly smaller than either, and it lives in the lowlands of the southwest -- mainly in the desert, where it nests in holes in giant saguaro cactus. In a few places, Gilded Flickers overlap in breeding range with Red-shafted Flickers at middle elevations (Sonoita Creek near Patagonia, Arizona, is one good example). In such places, the Red-shafted and Gilded flickers interbreed freely, producing a summer population that is nearly all hybrids. Learn more about southwestern birds in Audubon’s free online Guide to North American Birds, or our free bird ID app.

Breathless. The Male Wood Duck left me breathless. It is one of the most stunningly beautiful of all waterfowl. Males are chestnut and iridescent green with ornate colors on every feather. Unlike most waterfowl, Wood Ducks perch on trees and are comfortable flying through woods.#woodduck#woodducks#woodducksofinstagram#bestoftheusa_birds#duck#ducks#ducksofinstagram#waterfowl#waterfowlphotography#waterfowlphotographer#birdsadored#birdbrilliance#birds_private#birdlovers#birdrepublic#birdsofafeather#birdcaptures#birds_elite#birdextreme#birdsonearth#birdperfection#capturenature#birdmigration#arizonahighwaysmagazine#abc15arizona#beon12#cbs5az#fox10phoenix#natgeoyourshot#canonbirds

Tail Ends of the Wild Horses of the Lower Salt River. So, I’ve got a broken Radial Head on my elbow. As @katmars69 said, “at least I got a cool bird pic (Roseate Spoonbill, and not just a pigeon)” after falling while birding yesterday. #tailends#justforfunshot#saltriver#saltriverwildhorses#wildhorses#wildhorsesofinstagram#wildhorsephotography#wildmustangs#wildhorsecollective#capturearizona#conquerarizona#arizonasfamily#azcentral#arizonahighways#igaz#az365#igersaz#azstateparks#bestofthegrandcanyonstate#bestwildlife#abc15arizona#beon12#cbs5az#fox10phoenix#bringitcanon#natgeoyourshotindia
