📚 More Books Monday 📚

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend whatever you’ve been up to! 🥰

Both me and my husband are on a day off today so we’ve been to Toby Carvery for breakfast and are now just chilling. And yes, I did have a Yorkshire pudding with my breakfast 😂

I’m so excited to have received some amazing book mail over the past week, so let’s get to it…

🪶 The Friend of the Family by @deankoontzofficial was kindly sent to me by @katrina.power, @fmcmassociates and @thomasmerceruk and is about a girl liberated from a carnival sideshow who discovers her mysterious purpose. I’m so excited to read it! Thanks for the gorgeous gifted copy.

👄 The House That Eats the Dead by @maxdoty1 was kindly sent to me by @torbooksuk and @emelieslibrary! Described as “Grady Hendrix meets The Shining in this darkly fun supernatural horror about a family who move into their dream home, only to discover that it’s hungry…”. So excited for this! A huge thank you again. Release date is 13th August if you’re hungry for it…

🔥 Six Strikes by @antoniagraveauthor was sent to me by the amazing @avonbooksuk. There’s been a lot of mention of this book on here lately, and I’ve read some cracking reviews, so I’m looking forward to reading it!

I know I haven’t been posting much lately 🤍
Turns out my tonsillitis wasn’t fully cured last week, so my GP put me on another round of antibiotics — 10 days, 4 pills a day… yay 😅
I’ve been spending most of my time sleeping and reading, especially The Friend of the Family by Dean Koontz.
It’s a slow-burn psychological thriller about family, life, and growing up. Not the usual intense thrillers I tend to read, but a subtle, thoughtful story that really keeps you invested.

📣 BLOG TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT 📣

If you’d told me 20 odd years ago I’d be opening a tour for one of the biggest names in Horror writing I'd have presumed you were a bit of an Odd Thomas.

But here we are. And on 22nd January 2024, I'll be the opening spot for @deankoontzofficial’s new novel ’The Bad Weather Friend’.

So, let’s see what’s forecast, shall we?

📚 Benny Catspaw’s perpetually sunny disposition is tested when he loses his job, his reputation, his fiancée, and his favorite chair. He’s not paranoid. Someone is out to get him. He just doesn’t know who or why. Then Benny receives an inheritance from an uncle he’s never heard of: a giant crate and a video message. All will be well in time.

How strange―though it’s a blessing, his uncle promises. Stranger yet is what’s inside the crate. He’s a seven-foot-tall self-described “bad weather friend” named Spike whose mission is to help people who are just too good for this world. Spike will take care of it. He’ll find Benny’s enemies. He’ll deal with them. This might be satisfying if Spike wasn’t such a menacing presence with terrifying techniques of intimidation.

In the company of Spike and a fascinated young waitress-cum-PI-in-training named Harper, Benny plunges into a perilous high-speed adventure, the likes of which never would have crossed the mind of a decent guy like him. 📚

📚 BLOG TOUR 📚

After reading @deankoontzofficial since I was knee-high to an alien entity, it blows my mind that I’m reviewing his new novel as part of this blog tour from @fmcmassociates. It’s a huge privilege – thank you for my spot.

So what can you expect from ‘After Death’? Well, something speculative Sci-Fi mixed with thriller mixed with a cat and mouse chase set in a not-too-distant but, frankly, bleak looking future.

Getting down to the nitty gritty, main protagonist Michael Mace is head of security at a top-secret research facility. This facility, it seems, is experimenting with nanobots and AI technology. And then, something goes wrong and the whole facility is infected and everyone dies. All except Michael – who turn out to be a modern day Lazarus. And so he becomes the “Singularity” with access to the whole information superhighway in his mind system and the ability to hack into any system.

So far, so Koontz. The story, whilst holding on to that sci-fi element, then veers into thriller mode with Michael helping out someone his best friend, Shelby, admired – Nina and son John – but there’s complications. John’s gang-leader dad arrives on the scene. Not only does Michael have to evade being killed by this gang member (as he doesn’t know what will happen if he dies again) but there’s also the additional threat of US security agent and assassin Durand Calaphas. And Durand is a pretty nasty piece of work (I could tell you one of his victims and you’d agree, but spoilers right).

Koontz’ work, as always, is on the poetic side with flourishing descriptions over many many paragraphs and I do feel had this book been a little shorter it would have made the story tighter. There’s no real need to introduce characters just to kill them off a few pages later in my opinion. That said, there are some cracking scenes here that bring Koontz’ talent to the fore.

If you’re a Koontz fan then ‘After Death’ will likely be heaven. And thriller lovers will be well looked after too.

Out now and recommended.
