🍃 Explore the art of handmade papermaking using materials gathered from the Touchstone campus.

Join Katy DeMent @katydementforreal for ‘Ephemeral Mapping with Handmade Papermaking’ and explore the process of transforming invasive and reclaimed plants into handmade paper.

Participants will learn the history and techniques of papermaking while processing fibers into pulp, forming sheets by hand, and incorporating color, texture, and wet-on-wet collage. Using materials collected from the Touchstone landscape, you’ll create literal or representational handmade paper maps that capture a unique sense of time and place.

All levels welcome.
📅 July 20–24
📍 Touchstone Center for Crafts, Farmington, PA

Hurry! Registration closes June 29. Reserve your spot today at touchstonecrafts.org.

I spent four days at the Chop Wood Carry Water artist residency in the driftless region of NW Illinois. I met warm and inspiring artists, slept in a tent, made paper for the first time, saw and heard all sorts of animals, listened to the plants, pooped in a bucket, spent two days in the clay studio having fun, made friends with a chicken, and found myself again. Boundless thanks to @spontaneousvegetation for graciously hosting this event. #driftlessregion #chopwoodcarrywaterresidency #pachamanka #artistresidency

FROM-SCRATCH OUTFITS FROM COHORT 3 of OYOO!

A little over a month ago we had the joy of hosting our third symposium, and we capped off the morning speaker series with an incredible fashion show showcasing some of the creations from Cohort 3 of the One Year, One Outfit project.

This project has so much soul built into it. It’s a testament to people, animals, plants, many hands, lots of pivot points, and slowing down down down down— and how valuable all of that is.

It’s also a practice in moving away from quantifying value in terms of time spent, money spent. So many of these garments could never sell at a price point that would pay their creators a living wage — and while that may feel problematic on some levels, one of the questions project begs is: what is beyond quantifying value in terms of money?

How much does it mean to take a year to make an outfit completely from scratch? What do you gain from it? What do you offer because of it? What does the community gain? How does the culture shift? What world are we building into? What possibility are we demonstrating?

Sometimes we can get a little philosophical about it because we really care, but just as importantly as all the above questions: THIS PROJECT IS PRETTY DAMN FUN!

You can still sign up for Cohort 4 of One Year, One Outfit, but do it today! Our first meeting is on Tuesday night the 10th via Zoom. It doesn’t matter where you live, you can join us from anywhere and work in parallel alongside the RBF to make an outfit.

We love you!
