Walked into the @affordableartfairtexas as a side quest and the first thing I saw stopped me in my tracks.

Featured artist @kayla.powers and her installation of handmade native Texas wildflowers. The materials and colors took me straight back to visiting the country as a kid.

Each piece is organic fabric and yarn, dyed with natural materials and sewn by hand. It made me think of my grandmother’s quilts.

I walked the whole fair. Still came back.

Kayla is the sweetest soul I’ve met in a while. We talked about her process, growing up in Plano and living in New Mexico, and finally getting to a place where she could fully commit to her art. Stepping out on faith. She schooled me on roadrunners too.

That’s the beauty of this fair. You meet the person who made the piece, and they’ll work with you to get it into your home.

She loved that a man would have this piece in his house. I showed her my spot, and she helped me pick the one that fits best. Perfect texture. She worked with me on this government salary 😅 then walked me to the wrapping station herself and told me how to hang it.

I kept telling everyone nearby how amazing her work is. She offered me a job as her art manager 😂

She takes regular moments and makes them beautiful for someone else. We’ve got that in common.

Came for art. Left with a piece and a friend. Numbers exchanged. Locked in. Santa Fe trip loading 🌵

This is the power of art. It connects us.

Dang Houston 🌼 what a weekend! Thank you so much for coming out and saying nice things about my work. I’m so happy some of these flowers are heading out into the world!

I absolutely loved creating work at this scale and I’m already dreaming up another big project 🌸

Each piece is made with organic fabric and yarn and is dyed with natural materials. Me and @saint_fifth hand sewed them almost like quilts. Such an undertaking and I’m so happy with how it all came together.

Welcome back to our Artist Deep Dive series for "Conditions Allow".
For our second artist, we’re highlighting Kayla Powers, whose practice is grounded in vernacular craft traditions and values slowness, attention, and embodied knowledge.

In the context of accelerating climate instability, Powers approaches these gestures as both aesthetic and ethical. Her work considers what it means to stay present with the material realities of a living world under pressure and asks how we might build deeper, more reciprocal relationships with the environments we inhabit.

Rather than seeing ourselves as separate from those environments, her practice asks us to recognize that we are part of their ongoing transformation.

Come see Kayla Powers’ work alongside the other artists featured in "Conditions Allow," on view through November 6 at the NSC Art Gallery.

A look back at the opening of “homecoming,” the inaugural exhibition.

The night brought together artists connected to Michigan and the greater Midwest, exploring the ways that landscape, material, memory, and place continue to inform their creative practices.

The “homecoming” exhibition remains on view through October 16th.
