🚨 MUSIK BLOK IS HEADING TO WOMADELAIDE 2027! 🇵🇬🔥

From Goroka to the world!

We are beyond excited to announce that our 7 incredible Musik Blok lab artists will be making their WOMADelaide debut on March 7, 2027!

Kazibuda, Roz, Tina Kara, MXV, Mr. Whoo, Brendan Lahui and Lamoa of Tora — will travel from PNG to take to the stage and perform original music born out of our inaugural songwriting and production lab in Goroka. The crew will perform alongside the likes of @anginedepoitrine @leonbridges and @tinariwen amongst others.

With mentor and producer @setwun returning as Musical Director, this marks a huge milestone for Musik Blok and the beginning of something much bigger.

Musik Blok was built for this very thing - creating pathways, amplifying voices and showing the world what PNG has to offer. And this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our small community and the work and energy the artists mentors Nai Palm, Cazeaux O.S.L.O. , SETWUN, Ariel Blum and Ant Enoch devoted to them.

Big love for having us WOMAD! We can’t wait!

MEET THE PARTNERS | @apraamcos

We are so grateful to APRA AMCOS for their investment in Musik Blok. We would not have been able to deliver the program in its entirety without their belief in our founder @ngaiire and Musik Blok as a vehicle to empower our PNG artists. Big love to APRA’s Gillian Dunn and Chris O’Neill for making this groundbreaking support happen. And once again shout out Phil Eaton for spending time with our artists and educating them on copyright and royalties. APRA gained 7 very enthusiastic new PNG writers who registered immediately after the program. APRA’s presence ensured that the time together was not just about creating and collaborating but that the artists could also take ownership of what they’d done and that’s really important. ⬛️

Thank you to @misst_erri and Margo Nugent for putting together this incredible feature! ⬛️

@artykarateparty and @cazeauxoslo gave one of the Blok demos a spin on Melbourne’s @3rrrfm after their interview with @northside_records .2nd slide to hear her talk about the process. Probably the one of first times the Trobriand Island language has hit the airwaves care of Kazi and the first play from the Blok studios. The ‘coldest shit’ Nai Nai’s ever made straight up.

Shout out to the all star Blokers @kazibuda_ @mxvpng @oliboy777 and @mr.whoo28 on this one produced by their mentors Nai and Cazeaux. ⬛️

We had a few online sessions during the program. Shout out to the wonderfully articulate Philip Eaton @etonimusic from @apraamcos for joining us to speak to our artists about licensing, royalties and copyright in the Pacific region. Biggest love to our family @kaiit_isshe and @airileke for sharing their stories and enforcing the celebration and acknowledgement of PNG culture should sit equally with what your truths are as individual artists. 🇵🇬

MEET THE PARTNERS | @sognocafebakery

Kennedy and Lapieh at Sogno are the type of ‘YES’ people you need in the arts particularly here in PNG. We are completely indebted to them for allowing us to turn their entire bar into multiple studios but also hold our listening party. They requested nothing in return apart from a playlist of all the tracks created in the space (and that we didn’t break any of the furniture - which to be honest - they have the best furniture in all of Goroka!) but we’re about to throw in a couple of our own limbs as well as that exchange is completely outrageous.

Sogno has only been open for about 7 months but the building itself used to be an old picture theatre where Ngaiire’s grandfather used to work and now contains remnants of the old Pacific Gold recording studio, posters of legendary PNG musicians like Sanguma band, old photographs from times gone by and written poems from Laps herself. Sogno also means ‘dream’ in Italian. All these serendipitous facts we had no idea about until they made their space available and after months of trying to find the right venue, Sogno was locked in just a week out from the program launching.

As we mentioned before, there aren’t too many people who see the value of the arts especially in developing the younger generation and their belief in the project before we’d even proven ourselves speaks volumes. That’s true investment and for that we will be in their corner forever.

Make sure to drop by Sogno in North Goroka when you’re in town next and support them. You might even see Ken up on stage shredding on some karaoke or Laps reciting some of her stunning poetry - one of which she wrote specifically for the program (a snippet in slide 9). ◼️

MEET OUR PARTNERS | @warmaudio

Warm Audio has helped equip the Musik Blok Songwriting & Production Lab with professional studio tools that give emerging PNG artists access to the same calibre of microphones and headphones used in recording studios around the world. Their support helps create an environment where participants can focus on capturing great performances, developing their craft, and producing release-ready music.

From detailed vocal recordings to critical listening during production sessions, Warm Audio’s gear plays an important role in helping artists hear their work clearly and bring their creative ideas to life. We’re grateful to Warm Audio for supporting the next generation of music creators in Papua New Guinea.

MEET THE PARTNERS | @genelec_oy

Genelec is a world-renowned Finnish audio company trusted by music producers, engineers and studios around the globe for its exceptional studio monitors and commitment to accurate sound reproduction.

At Musik Blok, Genelec speakers gave our artists and mentors the clarity and detail needed to create, produce and listen back to music with confidence. Most of our studios were kitted with these monitors including that of mentor artist duo @kung_fu_high_kicks and our Kainantu King @mxvpng aka Michael Vaki. Michael drew inspiration from tribal warfare with his track ‘War’, something that is still a common occurrence up here in the Highlands.

Being from the autonomous state of Bouganville, Central Province and Chimbu makes us excited about the universe that exists within this artist. This is just the beginning.
