It's Humanities Councils Week. From October 19–23, 2026, we’re teaming up with the Federation of State Humanities Councils (@humfed) and the Mellon Foundation (@mellonfoundation) to celebrate how Humanities Councils bring people together. As one of 56 state and jurisdictional councils in the U.S., Missouri Humanities helps make space for people to gather around art, humanities, and culture—right in our own community. For example, we were thrilled to partner with @kclibrary and @mcplmo to host the fourth annual @heartlandbookfest earlier this month. This free event brough the joy of reading to the spotlight in Kansas City, providing writing workshops, author talks, and creative activities to Missourians of all ages. These in-person experiences invite us to learn, share, and discover something new together. Follow along throughout the week as we share how Councils make connection possible.

A game of bridge in Kansas City turned deadly in September 1929 – and the resulting murder trial became a national obsession. ♠️♥️ It all started in a house off Ward Parkway. John and Myrtle Bennett (photo 2) were playing bridge when an argument over the game broke out. According to @nytimes, Myrtle reportedly called her husband “a bum bridge player” after the couple lost a hand. John then reached across the table and slapped his wife three times. Following further argument, Myrtle retrieved a revolver from a bedroom and allegedly fatally shot her husband. Myrtle was successfully defended by former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate James Reed. Despite Myrtle firing four shots, including two at point-blank range, the jury found her not guilty in March 1931. All jurors (photo 4) agreed the shooting was an accident. 👀 The case captivated the country during a nationwide bridge craze. Some jurors even took up the game themselves. Bridge experts like Ely Culbertson used the case to promote the game – and themselves – speculating that if John Bennett had only played his cards right he might’ve lived… 👀 📷: @kclibrary

Spent last weekend at @heartlandbookfest at the stunning Central @kclibrary, and it was absolutely amazing 📚 We got to listen to @danielmiyaresdoodles share the story behind his book, How to Say Goodbye in Cuban. It was deeply personal and felt so close to our own story 💔 We even got signed copies! He also ran a mini workshop on how to start drawing graphic novels and comics. It was so helpful for Sasha, since he loves making his own comics - he was completely inspired ✨ Of course, we couldn’t miss the chance to enjoy the incredible downtown views from the library’s rooftop terrace (the fall weather was just perfect for it). We’re always in awe of this historic building, especially the original bank vault that they turned into a movie theater! 😱 And to top it all off, we got a memorable photo taken by @okcfilmjam 🍒 Such a special Saturday filled with art, stories, and inspiration! #kansascitymissouri #heartlandbookfest
