During this week of Indigenous People’s Day, I have been thinking about Darrell Kipp, and our collaboration on Summer Sun, Winter Moon. Darrell was an amazing Native American educator, documentary filmmaker, and historian who was a major force in preserving the Blackfoot language. He was also one of the most extraordinary human beings I have ever had the opportunity to meet, and I hope these clips give you a chance to get a sense of him. Summer Sun, Winter Moon, was a symphony/chorus piece we wrote together that explored the Lewis and Clark expedition from a Native American perspective.

We were honored to have the piece commissioned and premiered by the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and it was also performed by the Kansas City Symphony, and the Missoula Community orchestra near the Blackfoot reservation in Browning Montana. The entire project became the subject of a PBS documentary entitled, Summer Sun, Winter Moon, supported by the NEA.
