My first year in fire island (ten years ago) I was the only trans person in the pines some of the weeks I visited, and I almost ALWATS got kicked out of parties for being a trans girl lol. I saw whispers and gasps when I’d get into the lines of houseparties then when I finally got to the door find out I was being rejected because it wasn’t just a house party….it was a “sexy” house party.

I had friends who’d stay at the Belvedere hotel and then not be able to stay there because I had breasts and they have a no breasts policy.

As the summers went by I kept making these spaces MY spaces. I just loved the island and its history even tho there were a few bad apples. Probably because I could see clearly that amidst all the men, Fire Island was clearly very feminine spirited.

Year by year I noticed my Star begin to rise and as it did they all started being kinder to me. They all started to make exceptions for me. The thing about me is I don’t just take exceptions as the best it’ll ever be, I see it as the beginning. I brought dolls on my trips and let them sleep on my couch, I started rolling up to sexy parties with 2, 3 , or 4 dolls….and we would tear it tf UP. lol and get TORN up tbh 😂😂😂😂

I made youtube vlogs of me taking the island over and over and I wrote Surviving Fire Island Handbooks on Paper Magazine, released mini movies of the dolls in fire island for the internet to take to virality. More and more of the gay world saw Dolls confident and happy owning the island.

And because of all of those years I put in work and dealt with hella humiliation and exclusion….and because I didn’t close the door I opened behind me once I walked in, is how I chaperoneed hundreds of trans women to the island. THAT is why the Second Paul’s Dolls Fire Island cemented to me that I will do whatever I can to make Paul’s Dolls Fire Island happen every Fourth of July after.

It’s like we are doll multipliers lol…. Week after week there’s more and more of us and our love visibility opportunity and ultimately livelihood is only going up for now, no matter how hard they try to keep the doll down….she gunna get back up and she gunna pump it !!!!!!

Right now, there are transgender people trying to escape violence, homelessness, imprisonment, and death… and we do not have enough money to help them.

My name is Iman Le Caire. I’m the founder of Trans Asylias, @transasylias a small grassroots organization helping transgender asylum seekers relocate to safety in countries like Canada, France, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands.

People think this work is symbolic. It’s not.

Our work means:

Plane tickets.
Emergency housing.
Visa fees.
Food.Lawyers.
Mental health support.
Safe transportation.
Survival.

Right now, we have more than 300 cases in waiting, and we can only actively work on a maximum of 10 cases at a time.

Every week, we receive messages from people terrified for their lives.

This is a love letter to Fire Island and the @pinesparty

Thank you for having me, for giving me my family, for inspiring me with the most amazing music and for providing so much joy it makes me want to jump out of my skin. Thank you for the laughter and the tears (some happy tears, some not-so-happy), thank you for the memories and connections and conversations I will cherish forever. And thank you for that magical sunrise. There is nothing quite like dancing to house music on the beach with 3000 of the most beautiful souls as the choir sings and the sun rises. I feel my mom in that sunrise. I feel her dancing with all of us. Thank you for taking me to church this year and every year.

It wasn’t easy to reduce a week of impossible-to-describe peak experiences into one reel, so there may be others to follow. But here’s a stab at some of my highlights.

Being on the roster of this year’s DJs was a “pinch me” moment. The line up was insanely inspiring with @eliandfur @chriscruse @someone.from.berlin @teddpatterson @davidharness @djholographic @joeywiththemustache @djaaronaanenson @djmascari @that.cat.elvis @itsbenwild and lil ol’ me. Then playing my first masquerade afterparty was a new level of Fire Island lore for me. I feel so grateful to be accepted and included and embraced. There aren’t words to describe how much that means to my heart.

In just one week I made so many new friends (starting on the train ride) and I deepened my relationships with so many friends I’ve met on that magical island. I even brought one of my best friends to his first Pines Party and he loved it.

It made me think of my first Pines Party and how it gave me the freedom to be who I truly am, expressing my unbridled joy without reservation because everyone around me was doing the same. It’s a feeling I’ve never had anywhere else. It’s a feeling I wish the world felt more of. It’s a feeling I tried to share in this video…
