He felt music in his body before he could name it. At three years old a chord change would send a shudder through him, a physical truth that never left. Piano first, then a cheap Spanish guitar with action an inch off the frets, then the classical training that carried him to the Royal Academy. Along the way he absorbed Elvis, the Shadows, Hank Marvin’s shimmering lines, the blues that crossed the Atlantic and took root in England.

He played with future giants before anyone knew their names—John Bonham, Carl Palmer, Mick Taylor, John Glascock. When the compositions demanded a band of their own he formed Babe Ruth, found the voice of Jenny Haan, and walked into Abbey Road in 1972 with almost unlimited freedom. On the B-side of First Base sat a seven-minute piece he called “The Mexican.” He told the drummer to hold the beat without fills, without escape—just the pulse, straight and unbroken. He sandwiched a Morricone theme inside it because the melodies of the Spaghetti Westerns lived in his bones.

They never imagined what that unbroken pulse would become. In the Bronx it was claimed by the earliest DJs. Grandmaster Flash made it an anthem. Afrika Bambaataa carried it forward. B-boys dropped to their knees when the band finally played it live again. The track was sampled, looped, remixed, sued over, and still it refused to fade. A classical guitarist’s composition had become one of the founding breakbeats of hip-hop without anyone in the studio that day having the slightest idea.

Alan Shacklock eventually pivoted to producing full time—Dexys, JoBoxers, Roger Daltrey, Jeff Beck, Meat Loaf—yet the song he made as a young man continues to travel further than any tour could. He still writes. He still collaborates with the keepers of the breakbeat tradition. The shudder he felt at three years old never stopped moving through other people’s bodies.

New York, New York Part 1: Ain’t no city like New York City! Just spent a month back home, it was sweaty, exciting, fun, funny, hot, and a blast. Stayed outside, saw a ton of music and people, ate a lot of great food and made some new friends. A lot of these are from brother @breakbeatlou ‘s jam in Central Park celebrating the 40th anniversary of the ultimate Breaks and Beats records.
All in all, the call of New York City roars louder than it has in many years… y’all know what that means… see you soon, planning my Bornday in October already. Where should I do it, who’s DJaying and rocking with the kid? See you soon New York, I love you. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank my big sis @janeraab for the Hamptons hang/ hospitality and my brother @nickquested and crew for the same, plus the jokes, the loft and the endless seltzer waters and espressos👊🏼 #NYC #HipHop #Summerinthecity #OGratitude

SoundCheck @alan_shacklock & @boogieblind ( providing the drums) There are moments in life when a dream you’ve carried for years finally becomes reality.
What we talked about over 5 years ago came to fruition on that SummerStage stage, & to see so many of your posts go viral Thursday, Friday, and Saturday reminded me that this wasn’t just my celebration—it belonged to all of us.
One of the greatest honors was meeting Alan through my brother @casebloom in Nashville. When I told Alan on stage that night how much it meant to have him there, he shared something I’ll never forget: he was truly honored to be considered part of Hip-Hop culture. That meant more to me than words can express. Having him join us in celebrating 40 years of Ultimate Breaks & Beats was a full-circle moment I’ll treasure forever.
I want to extend my deepest thanks to Erika Elliott ( she is hip hop & her 4 Real ) incredible staff for believing in this vision & helping bring it to life.
To my brother @lordfinesseditc—thank u for always standing beside me. To @djeclipsersc , @boogieblind, @kdsml @bush_babees, @diamondditc, @sadatxbrandnubian , @grandpuba, @lordjamar, @darealgregnice @thelegendarysmoothb , & every artist & musician who blessed that stage with their talent, love, and dedication—thank you for making this night unforgettable.
And to close out the celebration with @djpremier... there couldn’t have been a more fitting ending 2 a night celebrating the soundtrack of our lives.
Most importantly, I would never be a man of honor if I didn’t thank my family and friends. Through every chapter of my life & career, you’ve been my foundation, my strength, & my reason 2 keep pushing forward. None of this happens without your love, your sacrifices, & ur belief in me.
To everyone who shared photos, videos, memories, and kind words over the last few days—thank u. Seeing this celebration resonate around the world reminded me that Hip-Hop has always been bigger than any one person. It belongs to the people.
Forty years of UBB isn’t just my story.
It’s our story.
From the Bronx to the world...
Thank U.

Alan Shacklock and Babe Ruth didn’t just record “The Mexican”—they created one of the most influential grooves ever pressed.

Long before it became a cornerstone for DJs, b-boys, and hip-hop producers, “The Mexican” fused hard rock, funk, and Latin rhythms into something entirely its own. Decades later, it still sounds futuristic.

What a thrill to see Alan Shacklock bringing this classic to life at SummerStage. @roundhillmusic
