I’m all for doing things the right way and leading with a perfectionist standard. But if you think this is dumb, please unfollow. I’m tried of chasing butterflies, it’s time to build the garden.

Also, these young men have designed, ordered, shipped, paid, cut, and produced the coolest Flex Friday Shirts all ON THEIR OWN!!! Happy Flex Friday America 🗣️

WHY ARE WE HITTING SO MANY PRs ON GAME DAY?

During fall ball, we’re still competing on Fridays while working through a capacity-focused mesocycle. The challenge is finding a way to accumulate the training volume we need without compromising our ability to express speed, power, and explosiveness on game day.

My approach has been to stack volume early in the week, then reduce volume as we approach Friday while maintaining high intent and intensity. This allows us to accumulate a meaningful training stimulus early in the week while managing fatigue leading into competition.

Friday becomes a day focused on high-quality, explosive output rather than accumulating fatigue. By keeping volume low and intent high, we can give our athletes the opportunity to express their physical qualities without adding unnecessary fatigue before competition.

Another huge factor has been the attendance at our optional Saturday lift. With the entire team showing up, we have another opportunity to distribute training volume across the week instead of forcing everything into fewer sessions. This gives us more flexibility to manage the balance between training stimulus, recovery, and performance.

This Friday also happened to be the final day of our block, so we took the opportunity to retest. These weren’t PRs compared to our initial testing numbers, they were personal bests compared to each athlete’s most recent attempt at each test.

That distinction matters. We’re seeing athletes continue to push their performance forward while still competing and accumulating training volume. The goal is not just to build capacity. It’s to organize training stress so our athletes can express their speed, strength, and power when it matters most.

And this group’s work ethic is without a doubt relentless.

MENTAL TOUGHNESS: NATURE VS. NURTURE 🧠

Mental toughness may involve both individual experiences and environmental influences, Clough et al. developed the 4Cs model: challenge, commitment, control, and confidence.

Research links mental toughness with more effective coping strategies, including problem-focused coping, and less reliance on avoidance-based coping (Nicholls et al., 2009). Athletes need environments that challenge them while providing the support necessary to grow. Psychological development is a long-term process, not something built overnight (Bull et al., 2005).

So stop worrying about whether mental toughness is nature or nurture. Focus on what you can influence. Set meaningful goals, teach problem-solving, create pressure in practice, and give athletes opportunities to respond to adversity.

Special thanks to Dr. Partridge for the discussion and for challenging my personal definition of mental toughness

“Maybe if you give him pitches to hit.” 😂 I was on one today as the Salukis get a big series win at Belmont, with Kristian Sprawling helping us shut up a Belmont fan near our booth.
