In Loving Memory of Jesse Jackson

The Center for Africana Studies mourns the profound loss of Jesse Louis Jackson (né Burns; October 8, 1941 – February 17, 2026) — civil rights activist, politician, ordained Baptist minister, and global champion for justice.
Rev. Jackson dedicated his life to fighting for civil rights, economic empowerment, voting rights, and social justice. As founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, he built a movement rooted in equality, opportunity, and hope for marginalized communities across the nation.

For Dr. David Jefferson Jr., Rev. Jackson was more than a public figure — he was a personal mentor, guiding voice, and inspiration. His leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others shaped generations of scholars, activists, and leaders.

Today, we have lost an icon.
A trailblazer.
A servant leader.

His legacy will continue to live on through the work we do, the communities we uplift, and the justice we pursue.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and all who were impacted by his extraordinary life.
Rest in power.

✨ Rahway JAG at Kean University’s MLK Day of Service Conference ✨

Rahway JAG proudly participated in Kean University’s MLK Day of Service Conference, joining peers from across the region for a powerful day centered on civic engagement, public service, and the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Our students, alongside the RHS Multi-Ethnic Cultural Club (MECC), came together to learn, reflect, and grow as leaders committed to service. The conference was presented through a partnership with the Human Rights Institute, MLK Commission, Engage NJ, and AmeriCorps, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and active citizenship.

Students had the opportunity to engage in an impactful panel discussion featuring:

• Rowena Madden, Executive Director, New Jersey Commission on National and Community Service
• Ayisha Mapp, Managing Assistant Director of Special Projects at Kean University and Executive Director of Plainfield NOW
• Dr. Aaron Smith, Professor of African American Studies at Temple University, widely known as The Rapping Professor

Following the panel, our students participated in Q&A sessions, small group discussions led by Human Rights Institute student leaders, and conversations focused on college opportunities, financial aid, academic programs, and leadership pathways. They also explored university resources, engaged in interactive activities, and reflected on how to bring what they learned back to their school and community.

Experiences like this reinforce our belief that leadership begins with service. Rahway JAG is proud to stand alongside our MECC peers, represent Rahway with purpose, and continue developing leaders who are ready to make a difference.
