Happy Sunday Miami! Here's our curated list of events for Sunday, August 23.

Your garbage pickup might be about to get cut in half and the reason why is a story decades in the making.

Miami-Dade charges a yearly solid waste fee that covers twice-a-week trash pickup, two big bulky-item hauls a year, and seven-day access to the neighborhood trash and recycling centers. The problem is the county has spent years charging less than the service actually costs. The fee sat frozen at $439 from 2006 all the way to 2017 because raising it before an election makes for a bad campaign flyer, then the county had to spike it $150 in a single year to catch up, and now the commission has voted to freeze it again.

Freezing the fee sounds like it helps you, but the money still has to come from somewhere, so you end up keeping the same bill while quietly getting less for it. What's on the table right now is cutting garbage collection from twice a week down to once a week and reducing hours at the 13 trash and recycling centers. You'd pay the same rate you pay today for half the pickup you get today.

This is the same commission that found money for World Cup subsidies and tax cuts, and the mayor's own office has tied those choices to the roughly $400 million shortfall now being used to justify garbage cuts. The money was there for a soccer tournament and somehow it evaporates when the job is picking up your trash twice a week.

The final budget vote is September 3, and under state law whatever they decide locks in for a full year. It's a public meeting you can show up to or call in on. If you'd rather not spend a Miami summer with a week's worth of garbage baking at the curb in mosquito season, the next two weeks are when your voice counts.

Officially a certified yoga teacher! 🙏🏼🧚
Of all the graduations in my life, this is the one that ‘taught’ me the most. I started yoga teacher training with no intention to teach or even what the heck I signed up for. And what I found was a safe space to let go, a philosophy for life, and a gentle sense of peace to meet me in tough moments. I found myself again, outside of all the titles and looked around to see a community of women looking at each other in love and support. Yoga has done many things for me- my puppy mocha, a release for the all the life stress, and now a community to call home. Truly grateful🫶🏼
