We lost another mother of a movement, @gloriasteinem

In talking with my Mother’s Quest Circle today, we’ve been reflecting on what it means when someone leaves such a void… and how we might call that energy into ourselves.

Learning so much about Gloria’s legacy today… about the solidarity and partnerships she built across difference, and also the ways the feminism she championed didn’t go far enough in dismantling the systems that impact all women. Holding both truths feels like the best way to honor her.

I’ve gathered and am sharing some quotes, reflections and art that got me thinking from women who’ve been sharing today. Tagging them below:

Wendell Berry farmed the same Kentucky ground his family worked for generations, asking the rest of us to slow down and pay attention to the natural world.

He never owned a computer. To him, speed wasn’t the same thing as progress. He was one of the fiercest, gentlest critics industrial agriculture ever produced. He fought strip mining. He fought mountaintop removal. He wrote, again and again, that the earth doesn’t belong to us, we belong to it, and then built an entire life around proving he meant it.

I recently sat on a plane next to a young person who never looked up from her screen. For 3 hours she scrolled, clicking through reels faster than I thought humanly possible.

And it hit me hard… that these screens have become such an addiction, they’re robbing us of silence, of relating, of feeling.

It’s been almost a year since I significantly pulled back from social media… a year that I didn’t know at the time was preparation for a much more hands-on life.

We’ve been on our new farm for 2 months now and I’ve never worked so hard in my life.

Mowing. Weed-eating. Unpacking. Caring for animals. Seeing clients. Growing my business.

There’s actually no time for social media. (Only the occasional FB marketplace purchase.) And I’m so grateful to have hands sore from moving dirt and rocks, not scrolling.

I don’t know where this post will find you… but I hope it’s a reminder that there is a beauty beyond the screens, beyond the likes and comparisons.

You might have to step away first for the space to open up so that something else can fill it, but the magic of life is there… and it is desperately seeking you too.

Well this concludes National Park Week and I can say I’m not convinced with humanity’s longevity after seeing responses to posts. I guess all I can hope is that we continue doing what is right. Pushing for more public land protections. I do not see myself as a divisive human. When I talk about politics, it is reflective from what I see from news. I make sure I see it on multiple outlets to ensure I should even open my mouth. I guess we really cannot talk to one another anymore. It makes me sad to think. I also think that land protections should be something we should all agree with.

As of right now here are some of the things happening with public lands:
1) potential land swap in Yosemite
2) gold mine plans in Lake Clark NP&P
3) Ambler Road plans in Gates of the Arctic NP&P
4) Big Bend border wall
5) double border wall in Organ Pipe Cactus NM
6) land swaps for land heiresses in Cumberland Island NS
7) Arctic NWR drilling claims
8) wildlife reserve and SpaceX
9) elimination of protections of Grand Staircase and Bears Ears
10) mining in Mojave N Preserve
11) potential repeal of the Roadless Rule
12) cutting down of cherry trees in NP land in DC for golf
13) wild horse debacle

No the sky is not falling. No the world is not ending. This is just what is happening. Remember federal public lands are controlled by the federal government. If I have to mention the administration in a post, it is only because it is the current administration.

Just take care of yourselves. Not sure what else to say. I’m tired, but I’m always going to speak up for nature. Love to you all.

Happy National Park Week! Yesterday I touched some nerves, blew out some gaskets, and rallied some people on my post in @nationalparkgeek opposing the land swap in Yosemite. Just figured it was good to put it out there. Never hurts to report the news on National Parks, especially on National Park Week. Being apolitical doesn’t work for parks. Honestly we shouldn’t even have to stand on politics with parks. Parks should be the thing that stay away from Washington. Unfortunately, most all of our public lands, well, they are absolutely controlled by Washington. There are a myriad of congressmen and women, along with cabinet officials, and the president, who are tampering with parks. It’s not feelings, it’s just facts. I’ve said it before, no matter the administration, I will complain if they touch parks. I just happened to use a very big outlet yesterday to report what was happening in Yosemite.

Would I like to get back just to posting parks and not inserting current events into posts? Absolutely. It does not bring me joy to talk about politics. But until politics, private entities, and billionaire stay out of the parks, it is what it is.
