Narration: It's always such a treat when the author of a memoir narrates & this was especially true here. Patric drew the reader in right away, with the things she was saying yes, but also with the way she was saying them- matter of fact but not without feeling, conveying her self awareness & her concerns through her steady voice, her practicality & vulnerability an immediate draw.

Patric Gagne is a sociopath. But not in the "traditional" sense that you're thinking. In sharing stories from her childhood through adulthood, she demonstrates what exactly that means to her & maps out her journey to define & navigate sociopathy. The memoir reads almost like a novel, her unapologetically honest anecdotes making u stop in ur tracks from incredulity but also from sheer admiration of her self awareness from such a young age, & her strength of will to better herself to the best of her abilities.

I think anyone can admit, seeing the title 'Sociopath' can be a bit, well, off putting, instantly signaling a "don't touch this" reflex. That's exactly the point Patric is trying to make. Not all sociopathy is the murderous kind, not all sociopaths are evil. In fact Patric believes there's a spectrum of sociopathy. But you'd be hard pressed to find a clear definition & it is often lumped together with psychopathy- which, while they can be similar they are not the same thing. Amidst the stories, Patric explains the nuances of sociopathy, explaining many psychological terms along the way, making it understandable for the every day person like myself, who may not be well versed in this world but can now actually follow the conversation.

Once I started reading I could not put this down. To say I was impressed with Patric is an understatement. I was lucky to join @keliteracy 's book club discussion with Patric herself and her intelligence & grace shone even brighter than I already thought it would. Her life story was immediately interesting & eye opening, her candor & her dedication to opening up the conversation surrounding sociopathy more than admirable. This is only the beginning for Patric, I suspect huge advances in the field (due to her efforts) to come
