Fall means switching gears, and sometimes that means trying something new...
~
Shop staff and guides have been putting in the work dialing in the fall Northern Pike fishing here along the Front Range. With water temperatures dropping in our local warmwater fisheries, now is a great time to switch things up and target something new!
~
Pike aren’t the only species worth chasing on the fly along the Front Range. We’re still seeing plenty of actively feeding carp, some great smallmouth bass being caught out at Horsetooth, and all sorts of other unique species in between.
~
Looking to switch things up but not sure where to start? Swing by either shop, talk some fishing, and let us help you put together a plan of action. We’re here to help you make the most of the fall season! #stpetesflyshop #weareguestsonthisriver #fallfishing #warmwaterflyfishing

Internal Border Wars...CSU (Dawson) vs. Wyoming (Kellen)
~
We are a divided shop when it comes to our local graduates and guides, and there is no bigger rivalry than between these two: Dawson (@bdaws) and Kellen (@kellen_Chaney). There’s no doubt it’s a friendly rivalry, but rivalry creates competition, and who doesn’t love a good competition?
~
Enter the Border Wars Competition: Leave a comment with your guess for the final score of today’s game AND who will win. The person with the closest guess to the final score will win a FREE @fishpondusa Fly Puck loaded up with a TON of flies (24 to be exact). It’s GAMEDAY, folks! Time to get excited for another season of college football, no matter who you’re rooting for! #stpetesflyshop #weareguestsonthisriver #borderwarscompetition #northerncolorado #southernwyoming

With this heat wave rolling through Northern Colorado, shop guide and staff member Kellen Chaney (@kellen_chaney) decided to give the trout a break and chase a different kind of fish... CARP!
~
Carp are one of the most overlooked species you can target on the fly, yet they offer some of the most exciting and technical fishing you’ll find. The best part? Most anglers have no idea where to start. That’s where we come in. Almost every employee here at the shop has gone down the rabbit hole of carp fishing and would love to help you get started. With summer heating up, there has never been a better time to chase a new species.
~
If you’re ready for a new challenge, swing by either shop to chat about the gear we trust, the flies we fish, and a few places to start your own carp adventure. Fair warning... once you hook your first carp, there’s a good chance you’ll be back for more. #stpetesflyshop #weareguestsonthisriver #warmwaterflyfishing #carponthefly

Conditions are changing quickly on our local waters. Are you prepared?
~
Over the past few days, the Poudre River has seen a big jump in flows, along with changes in the flies needed for success. Today, the Canyon Mouth is sitting at 543 CFS while still holding great clarity. We are thankful to see water coming down the canyon because that can only mean one thing... BIG BUGS! Don’t leave home without them, because it could be any day now we start seeing them.
~
While statewide snowpack has not improved much despite last week’s moisture, there is still light at the end of the tunnel for fishing conditions. Lower flows through spring and summer could create excellent dry fly opportunities, with better clarity and more fishable water for anglers chasing surface eats. Check out the latest Poudre River Assortment for a fresh look at what we are fishing, along with the Poudre River Fishing Conditions page for a full list of bugs to consider before your next adventure. The water on the Poudre River has taken an unseasonably early bump this week and is now around 379cfs. That does not mean you cannot still get out there and pick apart the water for some fishing.
~
Shop staff and guide Kellen Chaney (@kellen_chaney) went out to do some scouting and still found plenty of fish. The key difference in his experience was thinking bigger and brighter when it comes to fly selection. While smaller bugs might still remain viable, do not forget to pack your big bug box, whether you are fishing dry flies and especially subsurface.
~

Keep in mind that the Big Thompson’s flows have remained consistent and clean as we start to see changes in our local freestone river.
