My Love is a Durian by Kelly Kaur
Genre: Poetry
Series: —
Author: 🍁 Alberta, Canada
Setting: 🍁 Kananaskis, AB & Singapore
Book Feature no. 656, New Release

Overview
In My Love is a Durian, Singapore and Canada twine and intertwine, the places adopted and left behind bunch and twist. Kelly Kaur leads readers through markets in Singapore and up mountainsides in Kananaskis. These poems enliven the senses, from the taste of durians eaten fresh to the chill of snow melting on the cheek, as they dance the insider-outsider dance
My Love is a Durian seeks belonging without judgement, a place to rest, a place to work, and a place to grow. It shares the easy happiness of time with friends and family, the tension of coming of age, the fear and joy of making a life. These poems tangle with ideas of colour and race, freedom and acceptance. These are poems that reach out to readers to create empathy, connection. My Love is a Durian lifts up the voices that sing in the margins of the world.

“My Love is a Durian by Kelly Kaur is a powerful, stylistically diverse exploration of what it means to be a daughter, a rebel, and an activist. Like the durian, the poems are sharp-edged; they are also soft-centred, fragrant, and memorable.”

I thought we were launching a book. I didn’t realize that, in the final week, it would feel more like planning a wedding!

Five days before the event, I sent our volunteer planning team what could only be described as an SOS:

“Have you seen the tickets coming in? We still need to finalize registration, volunteer coordination, catering, AV, projectors, the presentation, music, centrepieces, flowers, décor, posters, banners, guest emails, sponsorship emails, an expedited book order, a Costco run…Oh, and I am hosting a workshop the morning of the launch.”

And the team mobilized.

They say you don’t eat at your own wedding. Apparently, you don’t eat at your own book launch either—but someone saved me a plate.❤️

At one point, we discovered we didn’t have the right serving utensils, and someone simply went out and got them.😅

As hectic as it was, it also captured the community spirit at the heart of The Fires We Lit.

If you’re planning your own event and currently caught in the chaos, all I can say is hang in there!

There are so many people I want to thank. I’ll start in the comments, but I know I’ll miss someone, so I need your help. Please tag someone you saw pitching in that day and tell us what they did.🙏🏽

Saying you don’t like poetry because you didn’t like what was taught to you in school is like saying you don’t like music because you didn’t like the DJ’s playlist at your cousin’s hoedown country wedding.

Don’t let somebody else’s taste limit your enjoyment of art. As Canadian novelist, playwright, essayist, children’s book author, and poet Adele Wiseman wrote, “Life is limited to what you’re alive to.”

Like musicians and other artists, poets work across a staggering variety forms and styles. Just because you haven’t enjoyed a small selection based on what you’ve been exposed to so far doesn’t mean there isn’t poetry out there that will expand your world and enrich your life.

Stay curious, friends.

Here are 7️⃣ rangy and wonderful collections of poetry coming out this fall.
