Kelly Mullen’s ‘A Murder in Eight Cocktails’ is a beautiful exploration of relationships and how a sudden event can reignite love in a marriage. It’s a nice example of the cosy crime genre, though its cosiness may be what lets the novel down.

The novel’s premise filled me with a lot of hope: an ASMR artist investigates a suspicious death with her husband… oh, and also her ex-husband. Mullen crafts the characters in a brilliant way, with the core trio having a great dynamic together. Willa and Marty are such a sweet couple, perfectly reflecting the reality of a marriage that has lasted so long. They are perfect for each other and that is made clear throughout the course of the investigation.

Another part that Mullen aces is the incorporation of ASMR. This allowed the novel to become a multisensory experience, tapping into all the core senses. I thought this was a really unique angle to take and provided extra detail to the settings and wider surroundings in the mystery. I also liked the implementation of cocktail recipes for readers to try in their own time. This allows some form of immersion to this novel that I have not seen elsewhere.

However, when it comes to the murder mystery, this novel is hindered. There were a few twists and red herrings planted throughout but not enough to make it intriguing. The interviews with suspects felt more like conversations that Willa returned to, rather than interviews that led to further interrogations. It was a touch too cosy for a cosy murder mystery. The ending came along quite fast as well, which was a big jump from the build-up that had been created throughout.

Overall, ‘A Murder in Eight Cocktails’ is a cosy crime novel that has well-crafted characters but not the most intriguing plot. It is still an enjoyable read, however, and I would enjoy reading more about these characters.
