Culture Matters

Now that I’ve started as part of the team at @kellys_mma , I had a moment yesterday that really got me thinking.

I’ve been through different gyms over the years, both as a student and, more recently, as a coach. One thing I’ve become increasingly observant of is team culture.

How do coaches talk to their students? How do they treat them? How do they treat and support other coaches? What do they value? And perhaps most importantly, what kind of environment are they creating for people to learn and develop?

One thing I noticed last night was a real sense of unity within the team. Everyone seemed genuinely invested in supporting each other, developing together, and contributing to the wider community.

That matters.

I’ve seen gyms change their names over the years while their underlying culture remains deeply embedded in the system. The name changes, but the way people interact, teach and learn often remains remarkably consistent.

I started paying much more attention to this after listening to the Singer brothers @adamsingersbg and @rorysinger , and the emphasis they place on how culture influences learning.

The more I study and research, the more I appreciate how important some of these seemingly basic things are.

Learning doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

The social and cultural context we create can have a massive influence on whether we develop a healthy, supportive learning environment.

And sometimes, before we start worrying about the latest coaching framework, task design or fancy terminology, it’s worth looking at the culture we’re creating around the mats.

Because culture matters.
