Most people learn to write in school. Very few are taught to write well enough to lead.

Module 9 of the Foundational Leadership Development Course (FLDC), Cohort 6, ran on Sunday across 40 Forts. It opened with a question that produced immediate personal recognition across every Fort: have you ever replied to a professional email with just the word noted? The silence that followed was answer enough.

The session made one argument from start to finish: writing is not an administrative task. It is one of the primary ways a leader exercises influence, builds credibility, and opens or closes professional doors — often before a single meeting has been held. Learners examined the four foundations of effective writing, the ethical use of rhetoric, how to use To, CC, and BCC correctly, the anatomy of a professional email from subject line to signature, and the common errors that damage credibility before the reader has even finished the first paragraph.

The most important lesson: there is no neutral writing.

Every email either builds your reputation or quietly erodes it. That is entirely within your control.

"The digital transition is here to stay; you either join the evolution or face extinction." — @oyiin_mi

Module 7 of the Foundational Leadership Development Course (FLDC), Cohort 6, ran yesterday across 40 Forts. It opened with a question that required genuine honesty: if someone who could change your life completely went looking for you online right now, what would they find?

The session made one argument consistently — visibility is not a personal preference. It is a leadership responsibility. The leaders shaping Africa's narrative in global digital spaces are not always the most qualified or the most credible. They are simply the ones who showed up. And while invisible leaders wait until they feel ready, opportunities are being quietly distributed to the people who are already present in the right spaces — not through formal announcements, but through a Google search, a LinkedIn discovery, a thread that reached the right person at the right time.

The session also challenged learners to think carefully about what they share. The digital space is permanent. A post is not simply deleted when removed. And a leader whose credibility is damaged by a careless post cannot simply delete the consequences. Visibility and responsibility are not opposites. They are the same discipline.

"The religion you claim today — did you choose it, or were you born into it?"

That was the question that opened Module 4 of the Foundational Leadership Development Course (FLDC), Cohort 6, which ran yesterday across 40 Forts. It did not land softly.

The session was not really about religion. It was about thinking. About the difference between beliefs that have been examined and beliefs that have simply been inherited — and how most people, including most leaders, cannot tell the difference between the two.

Module 4 named something many education systems have never addressed directly: rote memorisation and the intellectual dependence it produces. It examined herd mentality and how invisibly it operates. It challenged learners to construct and evaluate arguments, trace misinformation to its source, and apply honest problem-seeing to their capstone projects.

The response from students suggested the session hit where it was intended to. Many described it as the first time anyone had given them permission — and responsibility — to think for themselves.
