Author's note:

When Cody Goulder at @ronintheatrecollaborative told me they were going to produce my concept for this season's "Haunted Castle", I was over the moon!

I have had the honor and pleasure of being a playwright for each season since its inception in 2024 and have loved it dearly since. Every year, the folks at the ICC & Ronin endeavor to innovate and evolve this anthology show to greater heights. It's thrilling to work with such a great team that pushes you to go ever further with your ideas, and especially your scares. This year, I had a massive canvas to work with. Not just a room, but an entire campus, plus our marvelous "exhibits" from my fellow playwrights to complement with my wraparound script.

The key to writing horror is tapping into the things that horrify you. Thank God, many things do frighten me, so the tricky part was narrowing it down. Thankfully, my memory provided me fodder in short order.

I ruined Christmas eve when I was four years old. I was crying hysterically from the realization that I couldn't see myself through the eyes of other people anymore. I don't remember ever being able to do so, but apparently I must have thought it was an option. Knowing that I was stuck in my point of view was horrifying. I'm almost used to it now. Still the idea of being stuck anywhere unnerves me. It's not so much the location or the activity mind you, but the awareness that no matter what I do that I am trapped and perfectly aware of every second slipping past into forever. It used to manifest as being lost in a void so dark, I couldn't see my hands or any part of my body. Just eyes peering into the void with nary a mirror to recognize myself.

Now I think about how awful it would be to be trapped in circumstances you could not climb your way out of by design. Be it a relationship, a debt, or even a job. That's where our tour guides emerged from, but I'll let you see that for yourself when you see "Haunted Castle: Memento Mori" running 10/21 - 10/30

💀 Sometimes the past refuses to let go...

🧌The grounds of the ICC are already a thin place where the dead sing and spirits walk. This October though, ghosts confined in eternal repetitions of their suffering will become fully visible to us & if we’re not careful, we will become visible to them. Your guide will lead you through this undead terrarium as we the living must pay witness to the dead to survive…
