We had a wonderful opening day and reception last Thursday for “Handmades’ Tales”, our newest exhibition at the Webber Gallery!

This truly unique exhibition brings together an incredible group of artists whose work embraces and celebrates the handmade, resulting in pieces that feel unexpected, deeply personal, and unmistakably human. We’re excited to share a few glimpses from the gallery!

If you weren’t able to join us for the opening, there’s still plenty of time to experience “Handmades’ Tales” as it will be on view through December 4. Admission to the Webber Gallery is always free and open to the public.

We hope you’ll stop by and explore!

We’d love to take a moment to highlight another one of the eight talented exhibiting artists in “The Handmades’ Tales”, Kelsey Barton.

Through the careful assemblage of hundreds of individually crafted ceramic tiles, Barton’s work explores the space between architecture, ancient structures, and living forms.

The beautiful surface variations seen in Barton’s work are achieved through a process called soda firing, in which sodium vapor reacts with the clay during firing, creating unique, naturally glazed textures and colors.

The resulting surfaces give each piece an organic, almost weathered quality, further blurring the line between something constructed and something that seems to have grown naturally.

We’re delighted to have Barton’s work included in this exhibition and hope you’ll have an opportunity to experience it in person!

It looks like this piece isn’t done telling a story. At the conference, an accident happened and the piece was knocked from the pedestal. When I was informed about it, I had resigned myself just to let it go. I tend not to be too attached to my work once I’m done with it, many ways, I divorce myself from it to a large extent. It’s an unintentional part of my creative process, and speaks to the intensity that is present during the making part.
The show was about using waste stream products to create art, and while I was content to have this be the end of the story, one of my students and fellow members of the Green Task Force @ncecagreentaskforce had a different idea. It was so incredibly kind and thoughtful of. @kelseybartonart to use her skills at Kintsugi and bring this piece back from the dead, wresting it once again from the waste stream. Of course, when this piece shows again, I will have to put both of our names on it since it’s now a collaboration. #ceramic #ceramics #ceramicart #ceramicsculpture #sustainableart

Had a great time helping these eager learners through the Raku process. Love the community involvement, but could do without smelling like a burnt hotdog afterwards. I love how much they love it, though. #ufceramics #ceramics #ceramicsofinstagram #raku #rakufiring

Happy first day of classes 😈
I’m Kelsey Barton, a 2nd year MFA student at UF. I’m originally from Tampa and earned my BA from USF. My work often centers tile as a metaphor for human systems: rigid structures that warp and misbehave on organic forms. I’m especially interested in material agency through living mosses, crystal growth, and atmospheric firing. This semester, I’m thinking about how an implicit sense of creature can exist alongside archaeological ruins and geologic imagery. You can check out more of my work by following me @kelseybartonart !

Sometimes (as time in the semester allows) when I have a graduate student assist me, I have them work on making custom peep molds that we can use in-house. I find that it’s both a money saver and creates an element of fun (and legacy) in the kiln room. #ceramics #ceramicsculpture #kilnpeeps #madeinaskutt #ufceramics #ufsaah #peep #plug
