The Department of Geography and Geology is pleased to recognize our inaugural Honor Society inductees:
Aaliyah Alexander, Adrianna Wright, Braeden Barry, Kyla Nightingale, Moniqua Mothersill, Rachelle Downey, Sunny Samaroo, and Reshard Cudjoe.
Selected based on their academic performance in the previous semester, these students have demonstrated commendable dedication to their studies.
We celebrate their individual accomplishments and stand ready to support all our students in realising their full potential whilst supporting the academic journey of fellow students.
We extend our gratitude to Dr. Melissa Kemp of the Department of Integrated Biology at University of Texas, Austin, who delivered the keynote address to our inductees.

Melissa Kemp, associate professor of integrative biology and of Earth and planetary sciences, studies how biodiversity is shaped by global change phenomena through time and across space.

Her work — integrating paleobiology with ecology, evolution and conservation — involves exploring the fossil record of Jamaica to understand ancient biodiversity, as well as the ways environmental change and human activity play a role in the health of species over time. With NSF CAREER Award funding, she has developed and shared science lesson plans for teachers and STEM camp experiences for children in Jamaica for years.

Following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa there, she is using UT’s HornRaiser platform to secure support for the community there. Learn more at the link in our bio.

Visiting researcher Dr. Melissa Kemp of the University of Texas at Austin introduced @uwigeoggeol Level 2 Palaeontology students to the fundamentals of vertebrate fossil identification using specimens collected from her team’s research in Jamaica. She was joined by Ramon Robinson (third-year Geology) and Sunny Samaroo (third-year Geography) of the Department of Geography and Geology, who are using this collaboration to develop their final-year projects and explore new research pathways. Dr. Kemp also highlighted a range of exciting upcoming research and outreach opportunities for students in the department.

Join us at Patagonia Austin on Saturday, February 7, from 10 a.m.–12 p.m. for Science for Storm Relief—a hands‑on, kid‑friendly event supporting the NEET Young Innovators Program and their recovery efforts in Western Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa.

Drop in and explore four interactive science stations led by the Kemp Lab at UT Austin. Look through digital microscopes, build pipe‑cleaner lizards, dive into coral reef lessons, and try real STEM activities used in Jamaican summer camps. It’s a chance to spark curiosity, learn something new, and see how science connects us across communities. Snacks and beverages are on us.

Guests who choose to donate to the HornRaiser campaign during the event will be entered for a chance to win prizes like a digital microscope, Patagonia gear, and more. Every contribution helps restore classrooms, support educators, and keep young innovators learning after the storm. Come out, have fun, and make an impact. RSVP at the link in our bio.

Most of the lab is in the field in Jamaica, but many of us are still here in the lab in Austin! Working to finish the >2mm fossil picking from last field season before we get more from the current excavations, segmenting CT scans and 3D printing, preparing for STEM Girl Day in February, and of course, preparing to launch our Hornraiser tomorrow!
