Kendrick Lamar released good kid, m.A.A.d city 14 years ago today 💿 Released on October 22, 2012, the album marked Kendrick’s major label debut and introduced the world to one of hip-hop’s most compelling storytellers, turning his experiences growing up in Compton into a cinematic coming of age story.

Rather than simply being a collection of songs, the album plays out like a film, exploring peer pressure, family, temptation, identity, and the realities of growing up in an environment that constantly challenges your decisions. Tracks like “The Art of Peer Pressure,” “Money Trees,” “good kid,” and “m.A.A.d city” each reveal a different side of that experience, while “Sing About Me, I’m D**** of Thirst” remains one of the most powerful examples of Kendrick’s storytelling ability.

The title carries a deeper meaning, with “m.A.A.d” representing both “My Angry Adolescence Divided” and “My Angel’s on Angel Dust.” Even the album cover reflects its personal nature, featuring a childhood photo of Kendrick with members of his family. The project also features Drake, Dr. Dre, Jay Rock, MC Eiht, and Anna Wise, with production from collaborators including Sounwave, DJ Dahi, Hit-Boy, and T-Minus.

Commercially, the album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with approximately 242,000 copies sold in its first week. Its longevity has been just as impressive, becoming the first hip-hop studio album to spend 10 years on the Billboard 200 in October 2022. Songs like “Swimming Pools (Drank),” “Poetic Justice,” and “B****, Don’t K*** My Vibe” helped establish Kendrick as a major force in hip-hop, while deeper cuts continued to connect with listeners for years afterward.

Fourteen years later, good kid, m.A.A.d city remains a defining moment in Kendrick Lamar’s career and a landmark in hip-hop storytelling. Its ability to turn deeply personal experiences into a story that resonates with listeners around the world is a major reason its impact has endured.

@kendricklamar - Not Like Us ☝🏿🎶

Not Like Us" is one of Kendrick Lamar's most popular and impactful diss tracks, released in May 2024 amidst his highly publicized musical feud with @champagnepapi .

📌 Key points of the song

Main theme: Kendrick Lamar questions Drake's authenticity within hip-hop culture, accusing him of appropriating urban sounds and movements (especially from the Southern US and California) without truly being part of them.

The meaning of the title: "They Not Like Us" draws a line between those who genuinely represent hip-hop culture and those who use it commercially or superficially.

Style and impact: Produced by Mustard, the song uses a catchy West Coast Hyphy/Bounce beat, which instantly made it a global hit, playing in clubs, football stadiums, and even community events.

Phrase Coining and Pop Culture: The song popularized phrases like "A-minor" (a musical pun aimed at Drake) and became a victory anthem for Lamar in the conflict.

"Certified Lover Boy? Certified pedophile... Tryna strike a chord and it's probably A-minor."

Released in 2012 on Kendrick Lamar’s breakthrough album good kid, m.A.A.d city, “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” quickly became one of the project’s defining records. Produced by Sounwave, the track is built around a hazy, atmospheric production that samples “Tiden Flyver” by Danish duo Boom Clap Bachelors. Its laid-back sound creates a striking contrast with some of the darker and more chaotic moments across the album.

At its core, the song captures Kendrick’s desire to protect his energy and creative space while navigating the pressures around him. The record was originally intended to feature Lady Gaga, who recorded vocals for an early version, but her contribution did not appear on the final album version. In 2013, Kendrick released the song as a single, followed by a remix featuring JAY-Z.

Over time, “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” grew beyond an album track into one of Kendrick’s signature songs. Its message of protecting your peace, individuality and state of mind connected with listeners worldwide, while its dreamy production helped give good kid, m.A.A.d city another emotional dimension. More than a decade later, the track remains a defining moment in Kendrick’s rise from Compton rapper to one of hip-hop’s most influential artists.

#OliviaRodrigo reveals how #KendrickLamar’s “HUMBLE” inspired her song “expectations” 🔥

“When I wrote ‘expectations,’ initially, it was kind of like as a challenge to myself. I wanted to write a mantra song. I wanted to be like, “I want to sing this song every night.” It’s like Kendrick Lamar, “Sit down, be humble,” it gets in your brain. You know what I mean? It’s a mantra.”
