SHE. DID. THAT. And also because this absolutely deserves a permanent spot on my feed. No, this is not just another “proud mama dance post” - this is a “she took something terrible that happened to her, and used dance to help her heal from it post.” I know there are people out there who probably want to think that doing what she did with this dance was causing drama, or mean-spirited, or even uncalled for, untrue and unfair - but in all reality, this was her truth, and what happened to her was real, and nothing anyone says or thinks will change the truth of that experience. Through dance and in choreographing this piece, Leona was able to find a way to heal. So much could be said about what she’s been through, but instead we are going to choose to focus on how far she’s come and how doing this allowed her to take something traumatic and turn it into a valuable lesson that will only help her continue to grow into the person she is meant to be. We want her to grow up to actually be a kind, understanding, empathetic, discerning, assertive, accountable, loving human being. To be someone who knows right from wrong and doesn’t need others to validate who she is. To be someone who can stand firm in her beliefs, but does not bully those who don’t share the same, and can be respectful of those whose beliefs differ from her own. It will NEVER just be about the accolades and “perfect technique” because chasing trophies, applause, perfection and external validation is fleeting. Yes, she did manage to place at every competition she ended up taking her solo to, but it is still so much more than that - It’s what this solo meant to her. This piece represents so much of what Leona has been through, and to be offended by how she tastefully and respectfully decided to share her truth only boggles my mind. But regardless of the noise and negativity, we are so unbelievably proud of her and what she managed to create and accomplish. We love you Leona. And forever proud to represent her @encoreelitedancee studio ♥️🤍🖤

Not all scars are visible… How appropriate that May is Mental Health Awareness month, because it has been quite the journey for Leona. But through it all, this girl made the biggest pivot. She decided she wanted to compete a brand new solo, and she actually choreographed it herself. Our newly turned 14 year old, had 5 weeks to choreograph a brand new solo for herself, all while still managing everything else in her crazy busy life. And then this past weekend, she stepped out on that @energyndc competition stage and beared her whole heart and soul out there - not just in her “title speech” but also in her dancing. Her papa and I were so unbelievably proud of her for allowing herself to be so vulnerable and yet so strong at the same time as she shared her story. The truth is that no one truly knows anyone’s “full story.” But with this solo, Leona was able to use dance as a voice to express, release and heal what she’s been through. It isn’t about convincing others, because her truth is real to her, and for those who do not see, hear, believe or even misunderstand, it is completely ok because it doesn’t change her truth. She is and always has been her true, authentic self - and although she will never see herself through my eyes, all this mama wants is for her to know that her value, her character and who she is as a person will never be determined by anyone or anything else. To those tagged in this post (sad the limit is 20), Leona has just been so blessed to work with all of you, and it is because of all those experiences that she has not only grown and continues to grow to be the dancer she is, but she is also able to heal. Thank you to all of you for being such a source of joy, encouragement and positivity in her journey. And for Leona (and any other dancer out there who needs to hear this) I want to say: Dance for the pure love of dancing - Not for the awards, the applause, the recognition and external validation. Share your love for dance as a way to help others find that true joy within themselves. Work hard because the discipline and desire to grow is what builds your character. And never ever stop dreaming because nothing is ever impossible.

Throwing it back to 2021 with “Technicolor Beat” choreographed by Miss McKenna. Season 7 was a year of passion, love and growth as everyone recovered from 2020 and started to get back to “normal.” 🥹 Now these girls are teens in high school and 2 of them have joined our staff. 🫶🏻
