One Art Gallery presents INVICTUS

This exhibition is inspired by William Ernest Henley’s 1875 poem, Invictus:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black is the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Featuring ten trailblazing artists who, through their distinct perspectives, explore a shared human experience, the determination to endure, overcome, and rise above adversity: 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙨, the Latin word for "unconquered."

It doesn’t promise that we will always win. We’re excited to welcome the artists participating in the Nchedo Arts Foundation × Kuta Arts Foundation Residency Exchange Programme, a two-month exchange between Lagos and Abeokuta.

Over the next two months, the six artists will work across shared institutional resources, developing their practices through dedicated studio time, mentorship, studio visits, critiques, and conversations with artists and arts professionals.

We were discussing about the topic HONOR yesterday and i used Toxoplasma gondii as a metaphor for a heart that has lost its fear of God.

Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite that infects the brains of rodents and alters the neural circuits involved in fear. Instead of avoiding cats, infected rodents become less fearful and more likely to approach their predators. This increases the chances of being eaten by a cat, allowing the parasite to complete its life cycle. (You can make further research on this)

There are patterns that, when entertained long enough, desensitize the soul until what should provoke reverence no longer does. The result is a life with not an iota of the fear of God.

In conversation with Rezlogue, Adebayo Samuel Kehinde @kenny_at_it_again shares how his time at Nchedo Art Foundation @nchedo.co has given him space to develop a body of work that explores what remains when people move away from the places where they were raised.

Adebayo talks about how his research centers on his idea of “home as memory” helping him create photographs and collage that evokes a sense of familiarity and connection to the past.
