Raf Simons spring/summer 1997 ‘TEENAGE SUMMERCAMP’ curved hem tank top
-
As we transition into the autumn/winter season, I’m looking back at the multitude of spring/summer garments I’ve accumulated over the year and realize it’s finally time to begin sharing what makes some of these pieces so important. Although Raf is more known now for his early 2000s seasons featuring oversized silhouettes, and being name dropped in rap songs; he was an early pioneer for an unapologetically vulnerable, youthful, and masterful tailoring style for more simple garments like tanks, tees, long-sleeves, and trousers. Raf Simons championed this elegant & intimate style throughout the 90s, but doesn’t receive much credit for his early adoption of a more alternative & rugged androgyny that he spent his first four collections perfecting, being shown through video presentations exclusively. Raf Simons did not do runways until the autumn/winter season of 1997-1998. The collection ss1997 featured many form-fitting, slightly asymmetrical, and close-to-the-body cut & sew silhouettes, heavily reminiscent of teenagers growing up and still stubbornly wearing their old garments they’ve long grown out of (see slides 2, 6, 7, 9)… The video presentation featured a group of teen youths all sprinting out of class to skate, explore, smoke, and hang out at remote locations. The video concludes with them inside a water tower, surrendering to an otherworldly environment. I remember growing up hating my thin frame, asymmetrical face, and skinny proportions. Raf’s clothing provided an eye-opening alternative to constantly wearing baggy & oversized clothing to mask my thin proportions. There’s a certain life and atmosphere the clothes already seem to have, beautifully sculpting and adhering the wearer’s form once worn. Raf describes his garments as a mood that sorta just “hangs around”, and catering to the “confident outsider”. I’m very grateful for how this designer has been able to drastically shift my perspective on clothing as a whole.
