Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month
Just last year, I was able to live out a childhood dream of mine — playing in the National Football League. It was something I worked so hard for, something I couldn’t imagine myself not doing. Five years of tearing myself down just to build myself back up into the complete player my team needed.

What I didn’t expect was how empty I would feel once I couldn’t stay healthy. Injury after injury, and before I knew it, I was back home. I felt on top of the world in my own little bubble, stepping out every now and then to experience new things, but the truth is… I was suffering in silence and in isolation. My purpose at that point and time was consumed by a darkness that I could not shake. BUT GOD!!

On my ride home after being cut, it hit me: my greatest form of suffering had been for a football game — not for my Creator. I called myself a follower of Christ, yet I was doing everything possible that was worldly. At the end of the day, I wasn’t living for Him the way I should have.

I say all that to say this: talk to one another. I know so many people who lived — and are living — the same way I was. Football or not. The uncertainty, the doubts, the feelings of uselessness, the thoughts of self‑harm, all of it. We are men, and it’s okay to not be “okay.”

I plan on sharing my story along with a great group of friends while hopefully encouraging others to share their own. The plan is simple, help people grow closer to Christ while continuing growing into myself. Just because you were told “no” doesn’t mean you stop trying. You pray harder and grind even harder.
