POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
8 years ago, my family and i immigrated to the US from Ghana with the entirety of our home forced in a couple suitcases, daring dreams and a bold faith. nothing else. fast-forward to the years in-between, i found myself struggling to make sense of this move. i wrestled with feelings of inadequacy, believing i did not belong in certain rooms simply because of the way i looked and spoke.

once, my 8th grade english teacher made a literary reference to a school that was the oldest in the state and one of the best in the country. i watched my classmates turn to face each other and speak of their aspirations to attend this institution, and although i knew little of it, i altogether felt ostracized from their exchange...almost as if it wasn’t meant for people like me. a couple years later in high school, i adopted the ritual of watching basketball with my father in the evenings. during a college game, i asked him that if he was to have attended his dream university in the US, where would he have gone? he referenced this same school.

i knew nothing of the college admissions process in america, and yet was determined to hopefully receive admission to this university. at times, i questioned if that would even be the case, but i thank God everyday for my mother who imparted faith into me to hit that apply button.

8 years later, i am beyond humbled and proud to announce that by the grace of God, with the immense support from my family, and the prayers of my community, this ghanaian girl has graduated from the oldest public institution in the US, @uncchapelhill

Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “There’s a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

With this truth, my time at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was a sacred season in my life. I thank God for every friendship, opportunity, and experience that not only beckoned me to grow as a person but also in my faith journey.

However, there is more. There is always more. Seasons shift with intention. God began a good work and He will bring it to completion in His time. As I look forward to what awaits, I can trust that the Lord will illuminate my path. He was faithful then, He is faithful now. I pray there is never a day where I don’t rise and render Him praise.

What my parents left behind in Haiti, God redeemed here in Chapel Hill.
Tout glwa pou Jézi.
