Well that was a blast!!! After a couple weeks of rest and sitting in our gratitude we are pleased to share the official installation photos of the first year’s exhibition LONG ENOUGH TO TIE MY SHOE held @villaheikekunstverein

We would like to extend an extra special thank you to @ralfoto for curating one last exhibition, your guidance and expertise made the exhibition such a success. We’d also like to thank @clrbhlsn for taking the time to critic our work, we really appreciated your feedback.

Our hearts and minds are full after such an incredible experience in Berlin. Thank you to all of those who came from far and wide to see the exhibition in person, we can’t thank you enough!

A final thank you to @mvahrenwald and @chikaraumihara for organizing and helping everything go smoothly ✨

My project for the Upstate Photography Biennial is called “Pedestals for People,” and for now I’m thinking about how it sits within three distinct kinds of spaces:

1a. The public parks and sidewalks in the city of Kingston, NY.

2a. The galleries of the not-for-profit photography museum CPW.

3a. Here - on the endless digital feed of a publicly traded trillion-dollar company.

1b. If you live in Kingston, you have probably seen (or will see) the work in public.

2b. If you live in New York, I hope you make a visit to CPW.

3b. If you live somewhere else, I hope the digital images and text that I’ll be sharing over the course of this summer provide you with some small feelings of joy and energizing opportunities for contemplation.

Lastly , for now, I want to say that I’ve never had the opportunity to work at this scale before and I’m infinitely grateful to curators @marinaschao and @adamgilesryan for their trust and collaboration. Together, we settled on an installation of my project that would function as a unifying grammar - punctuation marks scattered throughout the entire exhibition space that reiterate the fundamental ways in which large exhibitions create opportunities for dialogue between diverse objects, ideas, and people.

Berlin was incredible and I’m so thankful to have done it with new friends. A big thank you to all the artists that shared their studios and their processes with us. And to the faculty @hartfordphotomfa for a great session and @ralfoto for curating an amazing show with us ♥️♥️

Thank you to Hartford Photography Program, Michael, Chikara, and Robert for welcoming me to Berlin and letting me be part of such a special week. The studio visits with Lukas Hoffmann and Clara Bahlsen were inspiring, and it was wonderful to spend time with artists so deeply engaged with the medium.

A big congratulations to the first-year students for mounting a fantastic exhibition.

It was particularly special to be there for Robert’s final session of a program he has built into a real juggernaut. Grateful for the invitation, the conversations, and the community.

A week from today in BERLIN — Hosted by Villa Heike, we invite you to the opening reception for LONG ENOUGH TO TIE MY SHOE an exhibition featuring the work of eleven masters students from the class of 2027. Join us from 18:30–21:30 on May 21st for an evening of music, discussion, refreshments, and most importantly photography.

Curated by Robert Lyons, this exhibition features in-progress work by first-year MFA students in the program. We appreciate the other faculty, Michael Vahrenwald (Director) and Chikara Umihara, for their valuable insight and assistance in making this exhibition possible.

The photographic works included will reflect a range of approaches and styles, yet all engage photography’s enduring relationship to time — its ability to hold, mark and measure a moment. Each artist uses the camera as a starting point for reflection on growth, memory, distance, and family.

Through gesture, landscape, body, and trace, these artists consider duration as both threshold and transformation. Working with distinct practices, they meet at long enough to tie my shoe — not a place, but a measure of time that allows for pause, awareness, and the possibility of becoming.
