Sometimes, grief shows up on a stage…in front of hundreds of people.

I usually consider myself an expert at holding back my tears. As a bereaved mom, I’ve gotten good at that. I’ve learned how to answer a simple ā€œHow are you?ā€ without it turning into a crying fest in the middle of a grocery store aisle. We save the real tears for the car or the quiet of our homes. But on Saturday night, in front of a room full of people, grief decided to say hello, and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

St. Michael’s Angels was invited to the Kids for Kids Dancing for Life, Inc. annual dance competition to share our mission. These incredible dancers and volunteers were there all weekend dancing their hearts out, and over the course of the event, they gave away a staggering $100,000 to children in need and foundations like ours.

But as I stood on that stage to accept a $5,000 grant, I wasn’t just thinking about the numbers on that check. I was a mom who misses her son.

I stood there, taking long pauses to find my breath, worried my speech was failing. Then, I heard the sniffles in the crowd. I even saw some of the young dancers behind me wiping their eyes. In that moment, I realized that speaking Michael’s name—even through tears—was exactly where I was supposed to be.

There are days I ask myself, ā€œWhat am I doing?ā€ but that night gave me a sense of renewal. Michael is no longer here, but he is not my ā€œpast tense.ā€ He is still my son. Just as I continue to do things for my child who is still here with me, I will always continue to do things for Michael through this foundation. He will always be alive in my heart, and he is forever my son.

To the KFK family: From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the $5,000 grant, and thank you for the standing ovation, and for being so kind to our foundation. You’ve given me the motivation to keep fighting for kids who are struggling just like Michael did.

And thank you, Gabriella Passanitti, for telling @kfklife about St. Michael’s Angels. Without you, this would not have been possible.
