Wow this is heartfelt ❤️

#repost from @kharareign It takes so much strength to navigate a world that is not designed to automatically include you or be open to you. Inclusion matters and Khara is often a trailblazer and the first person who is blind to try something she has never done before, like musical theatre or track. Khara is the only student at her school who is completely blind and she has worked so hard to learn how to independently get around her school and be a part of everything that she wants to do in middle school. Inclusion and awareness are so important and start with understanding and someone being willing to learn how to support a someone with a disability. We are truly grateful for the people who have been open to learning how to teach and support Khara. Everyone needs to feel accepted, and to be shown love and kindness.

In light of events regarding the exclusion of a child with Autism from attending a school trip and a child with Down Syndrome being expelled from dance class because she couldn’t keep up with it, I feel the need to share this. There are kids who no one invites to birthday parties. There are special children who want to be part of a team but are not selected because it’s more important to win than to include these children. Kids with different abilities aren’t weird, they just want what everyone wants: to be accepted and included! Khara shows every day that she is capable and able to succeed like any other student. The more she is able to advocate for what she needs to be a part of this world, the more she hopes the world will become more inclusive and accessible. It makes such a difference in the lives of kids with disabilities.

Everyone experiences #DisabilityPride differently, and that’s exactly what makes our community so powerful. 💙

For #DisabilityPrideMonth, we wanted perspective from the @BlindNewWorld and beyond – and our friends @KTNLife, @TheBlindWoodsman, @KharaReign, and @BlindLove.Woodburning to put that pride into words in responses that are honest, personal and uniquely their own. ➡️

How about you? Let us know in the comments what #DisabilityPride means to you.
