Loubie, my first dog, sweet, smart, funny, opinionated, adventurous with amber eyes that pierced your soul while melting your heart and a blue+red Merle coat that has strangers calling out “beautiful dog!”, died on Monday, August 24 ~3:13pm. She was with us at home. If you knew her, would you please share a feeling or memory.(Swipe photo for more thoughts too long for one caption.)

When we found each other at Nashville Humane Assoc. @nashvillehumane via @countryroadsrescue on a co-writing detour, I was looking for a small dog who didn’t shed or bark. She stood up to greet us in her kennel, took a kibble, laid down with her paws under the wire trying to get as close as possible to our petting hands, then walked with me so gently I thought she had slipped the leash. 3x bigger than planned, a lot sheddy, she was the perfect studio dog who didn’t bark until a year later when she gave a groundhog what for.

(Sound on:) She knew over 150 words, and spoke a few with her buttons; her favorite was “adVENture!” One delightful exchange, Jenny had pizza but hadn’t offered any. Loubie got up from begging, walked over to her buttons, carefully hit “Love you!” followed by “Mama Jenny”, and walked back to Jenny, sitting down to stare at her. Loubie got pizza.

Loubie went everywhere with me... cowriting all over Nashville (bork for a fourth), beach bumming/mangrove kayaking/scooter riding in Key West, emotionally supporting me on a 3-month MD gig at Milwaukee Rep, and fishing, hiking, and camping from MI to MO to ME. She did vanlife with me in two SUVs, tracked trails like a champ through rain and snow, and equally loved sunbathing and snow frolicking.

7 years was far too few for this extraordinary creature, and I miss her terribly. I’m sad and mad not to have her here, bullying me for pets, following me around, ever attentive even when fast asleep. I imagine her form still here in the many places she would be in our home, in the bed, on the couch, in the car with her snoot an arm reach behind me like a soft-mouthed monster ready to devour a chimken nugget or piece of anything I was eating on our overnight drives between NYC and Nashville.

Waiting for you to come “find me”

I got the idea for “boys like you“ back in 2021 when the Methodist Conference was deliberating (again) queer people’s right to access spirituality within their churches. At this point, I had been leading worship in Methodist churches for about 6 years. I’m thinking of it again these days as the Baptist Church deliberates women’s ability (or lack there of) to preach. If this song resonates with you, just know you were never the problem and you are not alone. Our liberation is bound together.I love you, happy pride 🌈🫶🏽 (co-writers: @erikhalbig @khiananoel @shellyfairchild and Hector Montenegro)

US HORSE GIRLS ARE SO FUN !!! 🐎🌾🤎💌

I was 3 years old when I first sat on a pony… and I guess something in my heart just knew- I belonged there.

All through childhood into high school, my dad took me to riding lessons every single week. While my mom took me straight after to music lessons. Those two worlds shaped who I became.

But when music started to grow, I was told I had to choose. To give 100% to one thing, meant letting the other go. So I let go of riding… and to say it didn’t break something in me would be a lie. It felt like losing a piece of my soul, slowly over time.

Because I was never just in it for the sport- I’ve always been the girl who loved the horse more than anything else. The connection, the quiet understanding, the way they carry your heart without ever speaking. My love for animals makes up 99% of my DNA.

And then, in a season where I stepped back from music, I felt the Lord say, “It’s time to get back in the saddle.”

Only He could bring something full circle like that.

Now, I have horses of my own- and the bond we share is something I don’t even have words for. It’s healing. It’s joy. It’s a reminder of who I’ve always been and how kind God is to restore what we thought we lost.

My heart is so full 🤍
