October | Next of Kin by Kia Abdullah

I listened to this as an audiobook (I love audiobooks!) and absolutely loved it. It still sits in the back of my mind, how can you forget a child in the back seat of your car, especially the aunty? This book really had me going over it all in my head!

I won’t give too much away, but that twist at the end… oh gosh! 😱 Definitely worth the read… or the listen! 🎧📚

🕵🏾‍♀️🧠 Some books make you wish the Men in Black would pull up with that memory-erasing flashy thingy so you could experience the twists, turns, and WHAT IN THE ACTUAL PLOT?! moments all over again for the FIRST TIME! 👽🔦📚

You know the ones… the books that have you side-eyeing EVERYBODY, questioning your own detective skills, and staring at the wall when you finally put the book down. 😩🔪

If I could wipe my memory and reread any of these suspense/thriller favorites, I’d be in that line IMMEDIATELY! 🤌🏾🔥

📚 The thrillers living rent-free in my head:

🔪 The Recipient — @audreyjcole
🧩 The Cipher — @authorisabella
🩸 Razorblade Tears — S.A. Cosby
🚨 Run on Red — @noelleihliauthor
🔪 Cutthroat — @authoroctaviagrant
🪓 The Butcher and the Wren — Alaina Urquhart
⚖️ Next of Kin — @kiaabdullah
🤫 The Accomplice — Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson
📞 The Good Samaritan — @johnmarrs.author
🌙 Night Watching — @tsierraauthor
🏠 The Landlord — Brandon Massey
🌀 His & Hers — @alicewriterland
⚖️ Laws of Depravity — @eriqlasalle
🏃🏾‍♀️ Her Last Move — John Marrs

Now, book besties, let’s talk! 👀👇🏾

📖 Which thriller would YOU erase from your memory just to read again for the first time? And what book am I missing from this list?! Because y’all know I’m always ready to add another one to the TBR! 😂📚

JUST FINISHED! So good!!
Have you read this one?

Book Title: Truth Be Told
Author: Kia Abdullah
Genre: Psychological / Legal Thriller
My Rating: 5⭐️

My Honest Review:
Kia Abdullah does NOT hold back, and I absolutely love that about her! Her storytelling, the structure, the delivery…it’s all so sharp and on point.

I was completely invested in these characters and their stories. Part One was REALLY good! I thought it was stronger than Part Two, but that’s not to say Part Two was bad. Part One just set an incredibly high bar.

I love complicated characters and layered stories, and this book has both. But what really sets Abdullah apart for me is how she tackles difficult, controversial subjects from so many different angles. She lets you see the same situation from multiple perspectives. She makes you question what you believe, how you’d react in the same situations, and sometimes how well you really even know yourself. I LOVE a book that makes me question everything! It really makes you think!

And it’s not just WHAT she writes about. It’s HOW she writes about it.

This is definitely a heavy read. Abdullah tackles subjects that aren’t easy to read about, much less discuss, but I appreciate that she’s willing to go there. Then, just when you think she’s covered more sensitive topics than is humanly possible in one book, she throws in yet another!

And that ending?!? I did NOT see that coming! Was it entirely believable? Probably not. Did I care? Not one bit! 😂

This was such a powerful, heartbreaking, thought-provoking read. So many layers, so many complexities, and so much to think about long after finishing.

What should I read or listen to next? Do you have a book or audiobook recommendation for my TBR list? (Bonus points if it’s on Kindle+ with audio or available on Libby.)

Back with Zara Kaleel in another legal drama, more tough subject matter, handled with the perfect consideration. This one didn’t quite grip me the way Take It Back did but I still very much enjoyed the storyline and the courtroom drama side of it.
I listened to this in between other audiobooks.

BOOK REVIEW: NEXT OF KIN BY @kiaabdullah

5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Next of Kin is an absolute masterclass in domestic suspense and courtroom drama.

From page one, the author hooks you with such a tragedy and moral dilemma. The pacing is relentless, the courtroom scenes written with such authenticity and precision that you feel like you're right there watching every characters testimony unfold.

I loved this book. I was questioning absolutely everyone and I could never have predicted the twists that came through at the end. It forces you to question where your loyalty would lie if something so unimaginable were to happen to you. It's emotionally pretty heavy - so I recommend checking trigger warnings - packed with twists and kept me guessing up until the final page.

If you love gripping thrillers that test the limits of family love, ethics and justice, this is an absolutely unputdownable thriller that is going to stick with you and needs to be bumped up to the top of your TBR.

Wow!! This has my head spinning, I was back and forth the whole time with who was telling the truth and what actually happened. Covering some tough topics, such as rape and racism, Kia smashes this legal thriller out of the park with a powerful yet thought provoking story! This one will stay with me for a good while.
Cannot believe i haven’t read any of her books before and will be moving swiftly on to the next Zara Kaleel story.

How have I only just discovered this? 😲

Amazon Prime members, this one is for you.

I have obviously been living under a rock because I had no idea that Prime Reading existed.

What is Prime Reading?
A selection of bestselling titles available for FREE to Prime members to borrow a max of 10 titles at once.

When do I need to return them?
Whenever you are done. There is no time limit.
If you're done with a book, press and hold down on it and click 'Return to Amazon'

Every time you return a book, you get another book added back into your allowance. However, do you only get to borrow 10 books at a time, this does not reset every month

I just got all these amazing titles on Prime Reading - how incredible is that?

How does this compare to Amazon First Reads?
This is also a Prime benefit. Authors put titles on here for free also, but you do not have to return these. You get an allowance of 2 First Reads titles a month and this does refresh every month.

I got hold of an epic John Marrs title on First Reads called Warm Bodies, which was disturbing, creepy and entertaining all at once.

Did you know all this existed?
I am definitely still in discovery mode.
