Easing into the last day of our long weekend, we take another stroll down memory lane with @kiakia.project, which started out as a final year project but became something beyond that. Graphic designer Eve brings old shophouses, signages and retro ephemera to life with her brand of mixed media, preserving them beautifully. “With all the beautiful shophouses in Malaysia, there are so many more possible adventures ahead for this project!” Eve can be found illustrating, reading, journalling and exploring the town (if you want to do the same, just “bear with the heat and put on walking shoes!”) her camera and notebook and being forever intrigued by the colours of our shophouses, how they’re mixed “in ways one could never image”, intricate grille designs and forgotten signages. She’ll photograph what inspires her, then decide on it being an illustration, collage, or gif, somewhat breathing new life into what’s old and forgotten. “Quirkiness is key! I love adding hints of playfulness to what I do so they tell a unique story of the shophouses/people/culture,” she says. Her favourite piece she’s worked on? “Toughest question, but it has to be this illustration where I “kept” all the grilled signs I stumbled upon in Penang into this “tin biskut”. I guess this is what I meant by introducing quirky ideas into the works I do.” Head to @kiakia.project to see more soothing illustrations for your feed, and to reminisce upon and appreciate what makes us truly Malaysian. #malaysianpride #nostalgicmalaysia #malaysianartists #merdeka #merdeka2019
