This summer, I had the honor of supporting American photographer kianatbates during her tintype project in Osaka, Japan.
Since chemistry cannot be brought on flights, I helped coordinate equipment, materials, and on-site logistics for her shoots.
What moved me most was seeing her entire family supporting her work. Under the intense summer heat, they set up a handmade portable darkroom tent—the frame built by her brother, the blackout cloth sewn by her grandmother, and amazingly, her mother serving as the most reliable on-site assistant!
Watching them work together to capture light and honor their family roots in Japan was truly inspiring.
Thank you so much to Kiana and her wonderful family for such an unforgettable time!

MFA Candidate @kianatbates is working hard in the Advanced Photo Studio here @notre_dame_photography making tintypes with her very gorgeous camera.

She’s exploring ideas about #immigration and #japaneseidentity and so much more.

Plus we love the smell of collodion!

All kinds of media explorations here in our MFA program. It’s a joy to support.
