Pine Mountain Road, home shaped by the way air, light and heat move through it. Passive design sits at the core of this project. Set high in the Byron hinterland and oriented north, the home draws on prevailing breezes and natural cross-ventilation, with generous eaves moderating heat across the day. Rammed earth and hempcrete walls carry the thermal load, breathing through a natural lime render rather than sealing the interior away from it. The result is a house that regulates itself, supported by rainwater harvesting, solar with battery storage, on-site wastewater management and heat pump hot water. Self-sufficiency here is a consequence of the design, not an addition to it. A floating roof hovers over a series of connected pavilions, held together by a courtyard garden and a century-old fig tree at its centre. Recipient of the 2026 Master Builders NSW Northern Excellence in Building Award for Modular and Innovative Construction Homes. Design team: Michael, Jamie, Mercedes and Leo. Vertical separation within Jardan Byron Bay is introduced through a series of cantilevered joinery elements. Accommodating furniture settings on one side and a display of side chairs on the other, they create subtle spatial divisions while allowing each piece to be appreciated individually.
