I couldn’t quite find the words yesterday for Rainbow Baby Day. 🤍

It’s such a sensitive and deeply personal subject, and I found myself struggling to put everything I was feeling into words.

But today I kept thinking… what if sharing how I feel could help someone else feel a little less alone?

So I’ve put together a few thoughts about pregnancy after loss — the fears, the guilt, the anxiety, the moments of hope, and all the complicated emotions that can exist at the same time.

Because you can be incredibly grateful for your rainbow baby and still be terrified.

You can be excited and anxious.
You can feel connected and disconnected.
You can laugh and cry.
You can hope with everything you have while being scared to believe it will all be okay.

And none of that makes you any less grateful, or any less of a parent.

If you’re navigating pregnancy after loss, I hope these words remind you that whatever you’re feeling is okay. You’re not alone. 🤍

And if you’ve been through it yourself, I hope you know that sharing your story may help another parent feel understood too.

To be watching your children laugh while wondering how you'll one day have to explain about the people who aren't there because of how they treated you after your baby died.

Grief is exhausting🫠

My baby was born at 28 weeks due to reduced movements.

Reduced movements were the only sign I had that something was wrong.

At 28 weeks and 2 days, I noticed that my son’s movements had changed. He was moving much less than he usually did, so I called my maternity unit and they asked me to come straight in.

What followed was discovering that his heart rate kept dropping. The following day, he was born by emergency C-section at 28 weeks and 3 days, weighing just 2lb 9oz. He spent nearly 12 weeks in the NICU.

Please, if you have any concerns about your baby’s movements, whether they’re moving less or more than usual, contact your maternity unit immediately.

You are never wasting anyone’s time.

It could save your baby’s life. It saved my son’s 🤍

Every baby is different and what matters most is getting to know your baby’s pattern of movements.

Notice what’s usual for your baby - the times they’re most active, how their movements feel and any changes from their normal routine.

If you ever feel a change in your baby’s movements, trust your instincts and get advice from your maternity team.

This photo was taken while I was sitting on a birthing ball in the days leading up to my daughter’s birth.

If you’ve read my previous posts about my healing baby and my son’s birth and NICU journey, you’ll know how important it was to me to have a completely different experience with my daughter.

I hoped for a VBAC, but I was also very aware that births rarely go exactly as planned. Because I’d previously had a C-section, I knew there was a strong possibility I might need another. Together with a mental health midwife and an anaesthetist, we came up with a backup plan that would allow me to incorporate the things that were most important to me if that happened.

I explored this more in my post about her birth, but ultimately I did need another C-section. This time though, the whole experience was completely different.

As a doula, this is something I explore with my clients too. Not a rigid backup plan, but an honest conversation about what matters most to them and whether any of those preferences could still be honoured if the birth takes an unexpected turn. Sometimes they can. Sometimes everything happens too quickly and they can’t.

A birth doesn’t have to go to plan to be a positive birth.

Mine didn’t.

But it was everything I needed 🤍

This week, the final Nottingham Independent Maternity Review, led by Donna Ockenden, was published.

The largest maternity review in NHS history examined more than 2,500 family cases between 2012 and 2025 and found that over 500 mothers and babies experienced potentially avoidable harm or death associated with deeply embedded systemic failures in maternity and neonatal care.

Among its findings were repeated failures to listen to women reporting reduced foetal movements, correctly interpret CTGs and foetal heart rate patterns, recognise babies in distress, and intervene quickly enough.

If you’ve read my previous posts about my son’s premature birth following reduced movements, you’ll know how fortunate I was that an incredible midwife listened when others hadn’t. But you’ll also know that I continued to advocate for my son when I was close to being sent home. Had I not trusted my instincts and continued to speak up, my story could have had a very different ending.

What I’m sharing today happened weeks later during our NICU stay. Although these are two separate parts of our journey, they both carry the same message.

Before you read it, I want to say something.

The care my son and I received from the vast majority of the doctors and nurses throughout our NICU journey was great, and I will always be grateful for everything they did for us.

But great care doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about the moments when things go wrong.

We improve maternity and neonatal care by learning from them, and I hope that by sharing my experience, I can play a small part in that.

During my pregnancy, listening changed my son’s outcome.

Weeks later in the NICU, listening changed it again.

Two different moments.

The same lesson.

Please listen when parents tell you something doesn’t feel right.

It might just change the course of their story 🌿🤍
