Exercise isn’t about competition. That’s sports.

It is also not about showing off, looking a certain way or being tough.

The goal isn’t to lift a certain weight, burn an amount of calories, put out a certain power output, achieve a number of reps in a for time WOD or finish a workout.

Those are metrics, that can be helpful to determine where you stand, but they are not the goal.

Exercise is about comparing yourself to who you were yesterday and determining who you want to become tomorrow.

It’s a journey of personal growth, one that can last a lifetime. It’s a long game.

In its essence it’s about learning to move better. With more awareness, ease, flow, efficiency, stability, coordination, endurance, strength, power and mental clarity.

This requires a curious attitude. Wanting to learn. Listening to pain, overcoming setbacks such as injuries, by adapting. It means you have to sometimes go hard and deep to push your boundaries, but at other times to calm down and take deliberate rest or even time off.

Let me share a bit of my personal journey, a mini documentary of how I’ve grown over the past years.

I’ve always been athletic in nature. That is rooted in my childhood, starting tennis at age 3 and doing > 10 different sports across my childhood years. Team sports, individual sports, ball sports, martial arts and even circus school. Having parents and a sister that stimulated exercise was a great fortune.

I even briefly got to taste what it means like to train like a competitive athlete in tennis, at the age of 10-12 @hofsaess1984

That’s also when I first picked up resistance training and running, which grew into a life-long habit.

During medschool I worked as a personal trainer in a gym.

Despite this background, my real journey of growth started when I discovered @crossfit in 2020.

You can see the transformation in the video, and I feel there’s still so much more to improve. And I love it.

Thanks to all the people I worked with over the years. Especially at @kickstartcrossfit and @vi.utrecht.

And of course my partner in crime @alevlaura ❤️. What a beautiful thing to now pass on that joy of exercise to our children.

It’s a real blessing 🙏🏻
