I read this poetic work last night at a time when my mind has drifted onto a certain line of thinking. Strong attachment seems to contain its own capacity for aggression. The more emotionally significant someone becomes, the more intensely we react when threatened. Love makes another person important to us, and that importance makes us vulnerable.

Perhaps this is why hatred is rarely simple. To hate someone requires enormous emotional investment. The person matters enough to provoke anger, resentment, grief, or longing. Indifference releases us. Hatred does not. It can be understood as attachment turned hostile, the bond changing form rather than disappearing.

I know there are many forms of love and hate. However, hatred can emerge when a loving bond breaks, with the person who broke it bearing its brunt, even if they never shared that attachment.

Moore’s title itself seems to contain the problem. I Ruined Your Life. An admission, an accusation, an act of possession, placing oneself at the center of another’s life. You’ll Hate Me Forever. Forever is a strange promise after love, because it keeps the attachment permanent. And finally, I’ll See You in Hell. Hell becomes a place of reunion, keeping the bond eternal.

Moore’s poems are less interested in deciding who ruined whose life than in what remains after the damage. The relationship may be broken, but the emotional bond persists in fragments: memory, accusation, tenderness, cruelty, longing, regret.

What remains when these become the last surviving forms of intimacy?

Perhaps this is why the poems feel haunted rather than sad. The past continues to exert its force because the people involved cannot release one another. Love has not disappeared so much as become unrecognizable.

Moore leaves us inside that contradiction. There is no clean accounting of who caused the damage or whether either person can be forgiven. There are only fragments and the strange persistence of feeling after the thing itself has been destroyed.

‘Flipthru’ is a zine of screenshots from flipthrough videos uploaded to and found on Vimeo.

I reached out to 60 Vimeo users asking permission to use a screenshot of their flipthrough videos for a zine. I heard back from 23, and their screenshots are included in this archive.

Thank you to all the awesome artists who participated, especially @jputtphoto who got to see his screenshot in real life at Book//Zine.

My flipthrough video is here but can also be found at vimeo.com/1123427819.

Maggie Dunlap, along with Lionel Maunz, is my favourite living artist. I’m extremely honoured to have worked with & published both. Michael Salerno designed the beautiful cover & Audrey Szasz was kind enough to read every word I wrote. As did Maggie, the perfect collaborator. I can’t wait for this book to arrive from the printers. It will take your head off.
