POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Cubs in the Tub

Okay, I think this is easily one of the most fun and interesting biography picture books we’ve read so far. It tells the story of Helen Martini, who somehow ended up becoming the first female zookeeper at the Bronx Zoo and honestly, the way it all happened is pretty unexpected.

I had never heard of her before, so reading this felt like discovering someone really special that history doesn’t talk about enough. While reading it to Xiao Jojo, I kept thinking wow, this woman really didn’t follow the usual path at all, but she still made it work. It made me feel like her story could be such a good example for kids, especially girls who are curious about careers that are usually seen as for men. Like, if you’re willing to learn and put in the effort, why should you be told no?

What I also like is that the story feels very human. It’s not trying too hard to be overly dramatic or preachy, but you still get that sense of determination and passion from her journey. It just flows naturally, which makes it really enjoyable to read out loud too.

I know there are people who might have mixed feelings about certain parts of the story like the idea of caring for animals in captivity or how some themes are interpreted, but for me personally, I just see it as a story from a specific time, based on real events. I didn’t overthink it too much, and instead just focused on the bigger picture of her perseverance and how she carved her own path in a space where she wasn’t originally welcomed.

And of course, I really love this book overall. The illustrations are so nicely done and really match the era, it gives that vintage feel that makes the story even more immersive. Plus, I always appreciate a good back matter section, and this one is actually super interesting. It adds more depth to Helen’s story and makes you appreciate her even more after finishing the book.

Finn’s Little Fib
✍️ 🎨 Tom Percival
📚 Bloomsbury
🛒 @kiddospunya

😭 mengingatkan Finn atas kebohongannya
😭 Finn ingin jujur, tapi kebohongannya terlalu banyak, ia takut neneknya sangat marah

The Wild Treehouse of Borneo
By the River of Borneo

There aren’t many reviews of these books yet, so I felt like they deserved a little more love and attention.

The Wild Treehouse of Borneo follows a young boy named Toobi who encounters animals that have lost their homes in the forest. What begins as a simple act of kindness slowly grows into something much bigger — together, they build a treehouse that becomes a safe haven for displaced creatures. I love how the story shows that even one small, compassionate action can create a ripple effect. The treehouse isn’t just a physical shelter; it becomes a symbol of hope, belonging, and community.

The sequel, By the River of Borneo, continues Toobi’s journey as he and his friends rescue a baby rhino. This instalment feels slightly more emotional because it touches on vulnerability and protection. The idea of saving such a gentle, endangered animal makes the message even more powerful. It highlights the reality of illegal hunting in a way that children can understand — without being overwhelming.

Story-wise, the plot is fairly straightforward. It’s not layered with complicated twists, and perhaps it could have been developed further. But honestly, that simplicity works in its favor. The message is clear and accessible for young readers. Sometimes, a story doesn’t need to be complex to be impactful.
One of the aspects I truly appreciate is the cultural representation. The characters are inspired by the indigenous people of East Malaysia, specifically the Kadazan-Dusun community. The subtle incorporation of traditional customs adds authenticity and depth, while also introducing children to the rich cultural heritage of Borneo. It’s meaningful to see stories that reflect local identity while addressing global environmental issues.

At its core, these books aim to raise awareness about the rapid disappearance of Borneo’s forests whether due to human activities or natural disasters like fire. They gently introduce children to concepts like deforestation, habitat loss, and illegal hunting, helping them understand how deeply these issues affect wildlife.

Wombat Underground: A Wildfire Survival Story

Hello! Back again with another real life story review. I can confirm I’m officially obsessed with stories based on true events, whether they’re about humans or animals. This picture book is inspired by the devastating 2019–2020 Australian wildfires, telling a fictionalized yet fact based story of how a wombat’s tunnel becomes a refuge for other animals during a raging fire.

Rooted in reality, the book gently introduces children to the natural behaviors of animals and the climatic factors that can lead to life threatening wildfires. The fictional touch — Wombat’s impressive digging skills and the cozy burrow it creates leads to a heartwarming ending where its neighbors find safety underground. Beyond survival, it beautifully conveys a message of kindness and compassion in the face of crisis.

Now, let’s talk about the illustrations because honestly, they’re nothing short of exceptional. The tones are sharp yet warm, perfectly capturing both the intensity of the wildfire and the comfort of the underground haven. The visual storytelling alone makes this book a standout.

I think Wombat Underground would make a fantastic classroom resource and an excellent introduction to the topic of bushfires. I’ll definitely revisit this one with Xiao Jojo when we explore this subject again in the future.

The Big Snowdown

Publisher: Casptone
Format: Hardcover
32 pages
🛒: @kiddospunya

❄️ Kompetisi musim dingin sebentar lagi dimulai.

Milo's Monster
"Big bright feelings book"

✍🏻 Penulis : Tom Percival
🎨 Ilustrator : Tom Percival
🌄 Penerbit : @bloomsburychildrens @bloomsburypublishing

The Octopus Escapes

When I first read The Octopus Escapes to Xiao Jojo, he was only mildly curious about octopuses. Now that he’s obsessed with them (even if he still adorably calls them “opus” 😂), this book has become a favorite in our home!

This is a charming tale about an intelligent octopus who’s taken from the sea and placed in an aquarium. Unhappy in his new environment, he uses his remarkable abilities to escape and return to the ocean, the place he truly belongs.

The story subtly introduces readers to the incredible traits and adaptations of octopuses in a way that’s fun and accessible for kids. I do wish there had been a fact page at the end with more information and maybe some resources for curious little readers (and their parents!). That would’ve made this even better for classroom or home learning.

Still, it’s a fantastic read-aloud. Perfect for a science lesson on marine life or for any animal-loving child. The bold orange octopus really pops off the page, even when surrounded by busy aquarium scenes, making it visually engaging for little eyes.

A delightful book that sneaks in science through storytelling and clearly, a hit with our little “opus” fan at home.

Incredible Jobs You’ve (Probably) Never Heard Of

Do you know what you want to do when you grow up? Kid, even if you have not figured it now, it’s totally fine. Most of us adults probably got asked this question too a lot when we were little. And to this date, many of us adults are still finding our purpose in this life.

Finding kids’ purpose is a process of discovery, but there are ways parents can help for example in facilitating extracurricular activities besides academics. Help them discover what they LOVE to do, what they are EXCELLING AT, what their PASSIONS are and support/equip them with whatever parents can.

Kid, you can be anything or anyone you want to be. You can even have multiple jobs these days. In the event that the job is still inexistent in this constantly fast-paced world, create it. This book illustrates jobs that are not common, from cow massagers to professional sleepers, there are all kinds of incredible jobs that you or even we have probably never heard of. Thanks to this book, Aksa is now aware of the unique jobs besides his parents’ various jobs.

Fun fact: prior to debuting this book, Nathalie the multitalented, has had many jobs-from scrubbing pots to exterminating rats. We believe her experiences gave her the inspirations to write and illustrate this book.

"It's okay, you can't make a cat do anything it doesn't want to."

A book about a boy who tries his best to take care and play with a cat, but the cat doesn’t seem interested at all. However, in the end, the cat invites him on an unexpected adventure into nature.

This book is about learning to listen to others (in this case is his grandad), and understanding the needs of different creatures (the 🐈), even when they differ from our own. Also, it's about enjoying the unexpected adventures.
